Some Oaklanders would rather navigate rush-hour traffic on the Bay Bridge during Fleet Week than venture beyond their neighborhood for dinner. We get it—why leave when you’ve got it all? But this list exists because Oakland’s Asian fusion scene offers something even San Francisco can’t replicate: a culinary alchemy born from the city’s unique cultural tapestry. Consider this your edible invitation to explore beyond your usual haunts.
United Dumplings – Rockridge
$$ | (510) 817-4070 | WEBSITE

Oakland has so few authentic dumpling spots that we made an entire guide to Asian fusion restaurants worth visiting in the East Bay. And United Dumplings – Rockridge is the best place in the area to watch the dumpling making process live right before your eyes. That’s why there could be a 30-minute wait here on weekends (and street parking is free). But it’s worth it to see delicate XLB, pan-fried dumplings, and spicy wontons turn into steaming deliciousness before you.
The flavors here are so good that even the slightly inconsistent Dan Dan noodles or green beans still satisfy when you’re craving that perfect bite.
Pintoh Thai
$$ | (510) 823-2370 | WEBSITE

And now we submit even more evidence that Oakland’s Thai scene simply isn’t fair. When you get to this restaurant near downtown’s busiest BART stations, flip over the menu and find the section that says “Khao Soi.” That one dish—simmered with coconut milk and curry paste until it releases its innermost secrets—is the reason why Pintoh Thai is an essential Bay Area Thai spot. The rest of the menu is a very good mix of authentic curries, stir-fried proteins, and fresh vegetable dishes.
Things can get incredibly flavorful here, so be willing to ask your friendly server for guidance if your tolerance for spice is moderate.
Jin Sing Restaurant
$ | (510) 532-8132 | WEBSITE

We’ve got some solid lunch spots in Oakland, but nothing like Jin Sing, a takeout restaurant that treats a midday meal of affordable specials and satisfying portions like the reliable ritual it is. The efficient service feels perpetually ready, and you’ll get your order the nanosecond you finish paying. You want everything on said menu—this is the best quick lunch we’ve had in Oakland.
The dishes have enough fresh ingredients to fill up a container twice, the lunch specials are consistent and well-prepared, and the portions are decent enough to trigger satisfaction. Grab the variety of lunch specials with a competitive price and a friendly staff that makes pickup a breeze. But make sure to order one of the satisfying dishes, too. The food quality is fresh and has ingredients that are so consistent, you can see your expectations met.
Kakui Sushi
$$ | (510) 338-1188 | WEBSITE

Oakland has plenty of sterile sushi joints with generic menus that do a great job of hiding gems like Kakui Sushi. But keep your eyes on this one. The Asian fusion spot with its clean, modern atmosphere has beautiful wood accents and ambient lighting that all create the perfect mood for a special night out. Get the chef’s choice sashimi, which arrives with creative small plates that blend unique and familiar flavors showing off how inventive the kitchen is.
Then follow it all up with the Warrior Roll recommended by the friendly waiter Kenny with perfect expertise.
Attraros Thai Eatery
$$ | (415) 654-0947 | WEBSITE

Unlike Oakland’s more casual Thai spots, Attraros is an occasion. Even though it feels a bit upscale, the dining room gets lively by 7pm on a Wednesday and the atmosphere is always turned just right. You’re coming to this Thai gem to savor every bite of Attraros’ incredibly flavorful, still-steaming-from-the-wok pad Thai. Focus on the main options, but also start with some well-executed sampler starters. Menu highlights include ribeye, lamb shank, krawpow gai, chicken sauté, and more.
It’s all served with authentic preparation and enough attention to detail to ensure you’ll appreciate every last flavor on your plate. Leave with a glass of their less-sweet Thai iced tea.
Sakura Bistro Tapas & Sake Bar
$$ | (510) 891-1781 | WEBSITE

Oakland is known for its vibrant food scene, its waterfront views, and (after reading this) “hamachi sashimi” and “Titanic roll.” For the uninitiated, one is buttery yellowtail served raw, the other is a dramatic sushi creation with tempura shrimp and spicy mayo, and you can find both at Sakura Bistro in Oakland. The food here is as delightful as it sounds, starting with an entire bento box special that will make it hard to go back to ordinary lunches.
But our favorite is that Titanic roll, a satisfying combination of crispy shrimp, creamy avocado, and spicy tuna. Enjoy it while sipping sake during their weekday happy hour. The hamachi sashimi alone is reason enough to visit, but for now we’ll just keep paying $18 for a similar plate at other spots before Warriors games.
Señor Sisig (Oakland)
$ | (855) 747-4455 | WEBSITE

We haven’t found a better Asian fusion spot in all of Oakland than Señor Sisig. This vibrant, energetic restaurant is making the best versions we’ve ever had of Filipino-inspired dishes like the Sisig Crunch-A-Dilla and Sisig Fries in a neighborhood that’s dense with predictable chain options. Every ingredient in every dish—from each crispy strand of garlic rice to the tender vegan chicken that fills the burrito—tastes like the perfect form of itself. And it’s also just a pleasure to eat here.
Service is generally friendly and most tables have a view of the open kitchen, where you’ll watch cooks sizzle and assemble away. There will probably be a wait, but you can sip a Mezcal Mangonada outside and stare at the Bay Area greats on the walls to kill time.
Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant
$$ | (916) 917-0129 | WEBSITE

Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant is really close to the heart of Oakland. But it’s still a hidden gem. You could argue that San Francisco has some good sushi options. But we haven’t found one as fresh as this. You’ll be able to taste the quality before you even finish your first piece. A team of chefs works quickly in the ghost kitchen, preparing rolls that arrive perfectly assembled. And the takeout line that’s likely forming during dinner hours is worth waiting in.
Your roll options include the Dragon Roll, Matsuyama Special, and Fantastic Roll—plus some customer favorites like sakekawa and negihama. But tender, flavorful nigiri is what Matsuyama does best, so make that most of your order. Just be sure to grab some extra ginger and wasabi on your way out, give everything a dip, and let it all satisfy you on the drive home.
Viridian
$$$ | (510) 393-9333 | WEBSITE

Viridian serves our absolute favorite Asian fusion cocktails in Oakland. Happy hour orders of tam yum tater tots, salt and pepper wings, and caramel crab sauce wings are constantly flowing from the vibrant kitchen. We get it—we love to sip these creations at the bar, too. But the one drink you should stay for is the Tomato Beef cocktail. The sheer creativity of the signature demands you settle in, savor the experience for memory, and briefly contemplate moving to the neighborhood.
Their creative cocktails and specialty dishes ooze flavor like a culinary waterfall. All of the above will effectively test your ‘Bay Area till I die’ loyalty.
Gangnam Jajang
$ | (510) 891-1335 | WEBSITE

Yes, the fried chicken with its crunchy exterior and soft interior is every bit as incredible as it should be at a place whose name is 50% ‘Gangnam.’ But everything on the menu at this Korean-Chinese establishment would be worth driving from Berkeley to San Leandro on a rainy Tuesday. Start with the seaweed rolls and the black bean noodles with pork and veggies, flavorful enough to satisfy any comfort food craving.
Then supplement your meal with a hearty main like the half-and-half jamjamyeon, a generous bowl featuring crab, meat, and squid you can build into your own little feast. Gangnam Jajang works best for solo diners or small groups, especially if you want to take advantage of the friendly staff’s quick service. Come during weekdays to avoid the weekend crowds and limited parking. There’s also a steady stream of online orders, in case that’s more convenient.
Saucy Oakland
$$ | (510) 764-3939 | WEBSITE

Oakland—and specifically Downtown—is spoiled when it comes to Asian fusion. Not only do they get the phenomenal Hamachi Spoons, but just around the corner, Saucy Oakland is creating dishes with flavors more satisfying than discovering your favorite hidden gem actually lives up to the hype. The simple restaurant space is quiet enough to not distract from the thrilling menu of Thai, Japanese, and Chinese combinations. Start by ordering liberally from their small plates section.
Over on the main menu, the must-order dish is the eye-rolling Miso Sea Bass. And you’re in good hands with pretty much every noodle or crispy wing dish.
