A great bar and a great restaurant each have their merits, but combine them and you achieve something truly special. If you need convincing, consider gin and tonic—fine separately, but together they create a classic that’s both refreshing and timeless. These hybrid spots offer that same perfect synergy. From cozy gastropubs to sleek cocktail lounges with killer menus, here are Forest Hills’ top destinations where the drinks and dishes are equally celebrated.
Matiz
$$ | (718) 880-1213 | WEBSITE

There are plenty of wonderful Spanish spots in Forest Hills just waiting to warm you up during this chilly January. Take Matiz, for instance. This neighborhood gem’s churrasco features perfectly grilled steak, crispy tostones, and sweet maduros that are sure to bring some hearty satisfaction to your day. The dish comes with chimichurri, sautéed onions, and a side of black beans and rice.
The tres leches cake is moist, creamy, and topped with a light whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon—a sweet finish that won’t disappoint. With fair prices around $20–$30 for mains and a cozy, warmly lit dining room with rustic wooden tables, it’s an ideal spot for families or groups looking for a flavorful, generous meal in a welcoming atmosphere.
Grand Army
$$ | (718) 643-1503 | WEBSITE

Grand Army in Brooklyn is our favorite spot for a creative cocktail and some seafood bites. The cocktails are expertly crafted and playful, and the house bread with miso butter has paprika and a nice depth of flavor. They’ll serve you oysters with little bottles of tasty sauces during their $1 oyster happy hour, which is available even on weekends. Just in case you don’t like oysters they also have options like a lobster roll or other seafood dishes.
If you happen to be one of those “I don’t drink” people they also have independent wine labels too. But also, why are you reading this guide?
IYKYK Forest Hills
$$ | (718) 880-2338 | WEBSITE

The hookah’s smooth smoke at IYKYK Forest Hills definitely falls on the chill side of things. It’s a mellow but vibrant spot with great vibes and varied music, topped with attentive staff and a clean space. It’s perfect for laid-back nights when you just want to unwind with friends and good tunes.
Tha Phraya
$$ | (646) 564-1456 | WEBSITE

Thai food from the central plains (the region that inspires this restaurant) often uses a coconut-heavy curry blend that gives a special richness to the soups, stir-fries, and rice dishes. The delicious flavor definitely makes an appearance in the Tom Kha Pla Tod from Tha Phraya. It also features fried branzino that absorbs the creamy broth quickly, so enjoy your bowl as soon as possible.
Bar Americano
$$$ | (347) 457-5426 | WEBSITE

This cocktail bar is another neighborhood option but on the lively Friday night tip, even though Bar Americano now closes at midnight instead of 2 a.m. Their amaro-forward bitter cocktails like the Appletini and Espresso Martini are expertly crafted, floral, and balanced with delicate flavors. So this weekend, next time you find yourself with an 8pm craving for expertly crafted drinks or (let’s be honest) a craving to enjoy the beautiful decor and welcoming vibe, head here.
Jimmy’s Corner
$ | (212) 221-9510 | WEBSITE

Sometimes a fancy cocktail isn’t enough, and you just want a cold beer to hit the spot. That’s when you head to Jimmy’s Corner. The atmosphere is authentic, the bartender is friendly, and the jukebox with old school tunes is a wonderfully, nostalgic touch. You can even choose from all the liquor you could possibly want – and either cheap drinks or beers for a few bucks. Plus, the boxing memorabilia is everywhere, so plan on either admiring it or just soaking in the classic old New York City vibe.
Whatever you do, do not ring the boxing bell on the wall in the corner seat by the entrance; it is sacred to them and from Madison Square Garden.
The Flying Cock
$$ | (212) 689-6900 | WEBSITE

The happy hour 2026 needs, no:deserves. The Flying Cock has been a Forest Hills staple and makes a satisfying, classic, Standard Burger. It has a juicy and flavorful chargrilled patty, fresh toppings, and big fat crispy fries. They also have fantastic fried cauliflower that you should know about.

The Ragtrader & Bo Peep Cocktail and Highball Store
$$ | (917) 261-5495 | WEBSITE

The grilled cheese and truffle mushroom pizza from The Ragtrader is rich, savory, indulgent, and perfect for these cozy nights we’re all craving. It’s a generous portion of crispy crust topped with melted cheese and earthy mushrooms in a truffle-infused sauce with your choice of add-ons (our favorite is the extra bacon), arugula, and crunchy additions like toasted pine nuts and fresh herbs. Plus, it’s paired with a carefully crafted cocktail.
Sweet Afton
$$ | (718) 777-2570 | WEBSITE

Sweet Afton is known for its Brussels Sprouts salad, which you can order with a deliciously spicy dressing. And luckily for the brunch crowd, they’ve brought back their fantastic bottomless drink option. The chicken and biscuit is our favorite and comes with perfectly cooked chicken, fluffy biscuits, and well-seasoned gravy along with crispy fries and a rich dipping sauce. Which is also perfect for pairing with their creative cocktails, so you should probably get a glass of that, too.
Draught 55
$$ | (212) 300-4096 | WEBSITE

This particular backyard area is tucked behind the main dining room and bar. That’s because (as the vibe suggests) this neighborhood spot is designed for standing-room socializing in Forest Hills. But one that happens to be pouring some seriously good draft beers.
Ten Degrees

Forest Hills residents and visitors seeking a great night out, take note – Ten Degrees Bar has arrived in your neighborhood. While it brings a cool downtown vibe to the area, the friendly owner Aaron and his energetic team ensure every guest feels right at home. The lively atmosphere is paired with delicious food served on beautiful platters and top-notch drinks, including the popular cucumber cocktail called the General’s.
The tender service is matched by great music and interesting conversations, especially during happy hour. It can get busy, but the warm servers and good selection of wines and cocktails make it a perfect spot for gatherings or a casual visit. Gabriel’s Bar & Restaurant
$$$ | (212) 956-4600 | WEBSITE

Gabriel’s is a classic Italian restaurant in Forest Hills. Their specialty is authentic Italian cuisine, so you can expect dishes like Ravioli Zucca, Brasato di Costolette di Manzo, and Bolognese. But during an evening like this, we’re ordering the Bomboloni. This exceptional dessert has a warm, pillowy texture, a dusting of powdered sugar, and is exactly what you want when you’re celebrating something special.
Kent Ale House
$$ | (347) 227-8624 | WEBSITE

We love a good sports bar, and that’s why you’ll find a lot of them are on this list. But there’s something about the friendly service at Kent Ale House, with staff like Siobhan noted for being one of the loveliest servers and bartenders around, that puts the neighborhood vibe here on another level. And in this bar’s case, it’s the laid-back atmosphere and amazing warmth that sets it apart.

The Bonnie

If you’re looking for a standout burger, we suggest the double smash burger from The Bonnie. After all, a perfectly smashed patty is known in the culinary community as the secret to a great burger. OK, we made that up. Either way, the crispy edges really punch up the beefy flavor and add a satisfying crunch. This is an exceptionally juicy, and flavorful burger.
