Want to impress without seeming like you’re trying? Skip the fancy wine lists and truffle menus. These Saint John spots nail that perfect balance—casual enough for a low-key hangout, but with cocktails and dishes that’ll make anyone think you’ve got great taste. Here’s where to go when you want to look effortlessly cool.
R Bar
$ | (506) 214-7300 | WEBSITE

When you realize how many nights you’ve spent at home when you could have been at R Bar, you’re going to get upset. This karaoke spot is one of Saint John’s most vibrant destinations – a place where you can walk in any night of the week and sing your heart out on the dance floor followed by affordable drinks. All that, along with the $8 beers makes it the perfect spot to take someone you want to have fun with.
Woodchucks Axe Throwing
$$ | (506) 646-8888 | WEBSITE

Walk into what looks like a typical sports bar in a Saint John industrial area, and your friends might wonder if you’ve lost your mind. If they do, they’re missing the point entirely, because Woodchucks Axe Throwing is anything but typical. It’s a lively, family-friendly spot with axe throwing that should be on Saint John’s tourism brochures. There are league nights for regulars, lane bookings for groups, and the most welcoming staff we’ve ever encountered.
So it’s about as far as you could possibly be from a stuffy dinner-and-drinks type situation.
Saint John Ale House
$$ | (506) 657-2337 | WEBSITE

You might walk right past this ale house in Saint John at first, mostly because you’re distracted by the bustling waterfront nearby. Once inside, you’ll find a warm, wood-accented space, friendly staff behind the bar, and some seriously good pub fare. For around $25 you can get the organic burger with a side, and at that price, there’s no other downtown spot we prefer for a casual meal and drinks.
Pub Down Under
$ | (506) 633-7061 | WEBSITE

Taking someone to a fancy gastropub is certainly impressive. But even more impressive is taking them to Pub Down Under, a hidden gem tucked away in an underground parking lot, where the fish and chips special is only $15, but the food is very good.
They care just as much about the service here as they do about the traditional pub fare (the staff is friendly and attentive), and there’s a very high likelihood you’ll end up sticking around for a couple more drinks after you’re done with dinner, especially with steals like $5 double Caesars on Sundays.
Moosehead Taproom
$ | (506) 635-7000 | WEBSITE

There’s nothing particularly impressive about a brewery taproom in Saint John with a patio full of locals drinking rotating craft beers. But you’re not going to Moosehead Taproom (only) for that – you’re really here for the grapefruit radler. It’s juicy, tart, and refreshing in a way we’d order by the pitcher, and comes with a tour of the production lines to make all your beer-loving dreams come true.
Jungle Jim’s Eatery
$$ | (506) 652-5467 | WEBSITE

Jungle Jim’s Eatery looks like a family restaurant and that’s because it is. During dinner service though, this Saint John spot becomes a vibrant, welcoming place that feels like a celebration in someone’s living room. The straightforward menu has excellent versions of classic dishes like steak and a Caesar salad prepared with crisp greens and tangy dressing.
Plus if you’re deciding which drink to order, there are helpful recommendations from the servers about what kind of refreshing cocktail you’ll get with their perfectly mixed creations. Next time you want to show friends you know good food while also enjoying a comfortable atmosphere, this is your spot.
Eighty Three Bar Arcade
$ | WEBSITE

Eighty Three Bar Arcade is a fantastic bar arcade in a city where drinking spots could easily get away with charging for the games and serving people mediocre drinks quickly enough so that the Uber surge pricing doesn’t kick in. You can pretty much always find a spot at the bar, but it’ll still be lively enough that your friends will think you’re in the know. You’ll want to try both the game-themed cocktails and the surprisingly decent beer selection to share.
Hopscotch Whisky Bar
$$ | (506) 642-3371 | WEBSITE

You’re looking for a relaxed spot to reconnect with your college friend, but that doesn’t mean you have to settle for the same old pub fare you survived on back in the day. This cozy whisky bar in Saint John has an inviting setup – a stylish cocktail area, some expanded patio seating with an outdoor furnace, and a warm atmosphere that works even on cooler evenings – and the Canadian-focused drinks are outstanding.
The Old Fashioned variations and the jalapeño lemonade are the essential things to try, but you can’t really go wrong with any cocktail here. The whisky selection highlights quality Canadian spirits at reasonable prices, and the attentive staff will make sure your glass stays filled all evening.
