And you better believe there are delicious American classics like a barbecue beef and cheddar on a brioche bun with sweet potato fries and impressive prime rib bites.
It’s also a prime spot for meat lovers—focus on the rib eye steak, barbecue beef sandwich, and the prime rib bites. It’s always lively and a little bit loud in here, and the friendly servers like Hala and Loren and a late closing time cement them as our favorite spot in this part of El Cajon.

They’re all here for outstanding burgers, like the classic cheeseburger with its juicy patty and perfectly toasted bun, the delicious chicken sandwich, and maybe the best fried zucchini in San Diego (a generous portion for $8 or a shareable basket for $14). Deservedly so, because it’s the best spot in El Cajon for a burger before heading to some hiking trail in the nearby mountains. The line moves fast, though, and so does service once you’re inside.
Focus on the “secret menu” section—there’s the Flying Dutchman animal style, which is an incredibly messy but tasty double cheeseburger with grilled onions and special sauce, and crispy animal style fries, a.k.a. golden fries topped with melted cheese, grilled onions, and that same savory-special sauce that soaks into every bite. They also do some of the better 4X4 animal style burgers (not too greasy) and fresh-cut fries in town.
The Habit Burger Grill

Somewhere that’s a step up from typical fast food, where you can grab a thick, expertly grilled burger and a creamy, perfectly blended milkshake. The counter is where you want to be, chatting with regulars who come by weekly, and finding common ground over fresh, hot fries. Order the Portobello Mushroom Burger, which swaps in delicious sauces for the ordinary.
They also have really good cheeseburger combos—because, you know, value—that don’t feel like an afterthought, especially the Cheeseburger Combo Plate with consistently good fries.
Dairy Queen (Treat)

Dairy Queen (Treat) has all the makings of an ice cream parlor without actually being one. Let’s be clear: this is a good thing. It’s best for treats on the weekends (get the Oreo Fudge Brownie Blizzard) and for family outings any day, when they serve up consistently amazing ice cream with friendly and attentive service.
