Matosinhos today is more of a seaside destination for sun-seekers and surfers than just a fishing port. But even as this coastal city north of Porto gets progressively more tourist-friendly, it’s undeniably one of Portugal’s most beloved spots for a proper burger. Patty joints are tucked along almost every cobblestone lane, and some are even worth braving the summer crowds at 8pm on a Friday. Here are the best burgers in Matosinhos.
Borges Burger

We’re always skeptical of burger joints that get hyped on ‘best of’ lists, so we were wary when Borges Burger made the cut for Matosinhos’ top spots. But the burgers are so good here, we wouldn’t care if they’re owned by a fast-food chain (for the record, they’re not). This pleasant, clean spot gets busy during peak hours, but if you show up early, the quick service staff might be able to show you to an open seat at a table.
The menu offers consistent, well-made options, but talk to the staff about what you like, and they’ll point you toward the juicy meat and high-quality ingredients that keep repeat customers coming back.
O Pit Dog

Lunch at this authentic Brazilian spot feels like a quick trip to São Paulo, one where you’ll devour crispy X-Bacon Cheddar burgers piled high with cheese and fried cassava that’s perfectly golden. The dining area has simple wooden tables, colorful walls with Brazilian flags, and so much lively chatter you might forget you’re in Matosinhos.
And although you may recognize the famous skewers and snacks from street vendors, it’s uniquely welcoming here: perfect for casual family dinners, quick friend gatherings, or whenever you want big, tasty portions without the wait.
Hamburgueria D’Avó Ana

Hamburgueria D’Avó Ana is the family-friendly burger spot that stands out among Matosinhos’ many options. Having such strong competition might seem challenging, but D’Avó Ana is our top choice in the area. This welcoming Portuguese burger restaurant with excellent parking is a model of consistency, serving wonderfully personal food that tastes incredible, with reliably exceptional service and a comfortable, kid-friendly space that still buzzes with the same warmth it’s always had.
The menu is packed with hits, but if it’s your first visit, prioritize the rustic burger with its slight black pudding flavor, the variety of vegetarian options, and the sangria served with minimal ice. The homemade desserts, reminiscent of those made by a grandmother, are exceptional and shouldn’t be missed.
Tasquinha do Caco – São João

A meal at this burger-focused spot will cost you around €15 per person, which is a reasonable price for just about everybody in modern times. But if you’re in the market for having a casual dinner or celebrating a small win, Tasquinha do Caco – São João is a great place to do it. The menu stays consistent, but you can generally expect excellent burgers and exceptional desserts ranging from classic beef patties to gluten-free options.
Run by a young staff in a friendly environment, dinner here feels less like a formal restaurant and more like hanging with friends who happen to have a fantastic burger spot in their neighborhood.
Nook – Hamburgueria & Pregaria

If you’re someone who, in this day and age, still loves a great burger (for the record, we do too), head to Nook. The specialty at this Matosinhos spot is their diverse menu of high-quality hamburgers—a modern, comfortable variety that’s unlike anything else in the Porto area. They’re made with attention to detail and served by an attentive team, which provides a memorable gastronomic experience that hits the spot no matter what you’re craving.
Plus, with generally adequate prices, Nook is a great casual option, especially for a satisfying meal out.
Uata?! Burger

Uata?! Burger opened in 2024 and has been a standout spot in Matosinhos ever since. This burger joint was one of the first quality destinations to move into the area, and now it has established itself as the go-to restaurant for the last couple years. They serve fantastic burgers, perfectly-made sauces, and generous portions of sides in a cozy space that feels as welcoming as it did when it first opened.
Getting a table during peak hours can be tricky, so if you’re more of the spontaneous type, just do what we do and walk in after 8pm on weeknights for some relaxed burger and fries.
Real Hamburgueria Portuguesa
$$$ | 222 011 930 | WEBSITE

Real Hamburgueria Portuguesa is a straightforward, cozy burger spot where you go to satisfy a serious craving without breaking the bank. Generous burgers and fries arrive on simple plates, servers greet you with genuine smiles, and there’s a standout submarine dish that makes the whole trip worthwhile.
Prioritize the large, perfectly cooked burgers that justify their reasonable price, the hearty fries that come in shareable portions, and the overall experience that feels relaxed and unpretentious, including a quiet dining room with many tables where you can actually hear your conversation. Just be aware that the patio area sometimes gets a whiff of second-hand smoke from the entrance, but the friendly service and tasty food more than make up for it.
Ruta 9 RestoBar

American-style eateries might not be lining every street in Matosinhos, but the city does have Ruta 9 RestoBar. The cozy spot is housed in a space with Route 66 decor and has delicious burgers, a welcoming staff, and a calm atmosphere perfect for families. When you get hungry, just head inside for ribs that fall off the bone and homemade churros for dessert.
Boulevard Burger House
$ | 226 000 570 | WEBSITE

Boulevard Burger House is the dictionary definition of “under the radar.” This charming burger spot is housed in what looks like a small, unassuming storefront, but step inside and you’ll find a very pretty setting with a cozy, intimate feel. The menu revolves around quality burgers and desserts. On the savory side, you’ll find classic beef burgers (good but nothing special) and a chicken burger that, unfortunately, has a strange and sickening texture.
For dessert, though, the offerings are genuinely enjoyable. Each of these solid meals costs around $15, but the friendly, if slightly low-energy, service and pleasant atmosphere make them feel like a worthwhile stop.
Hamburgueria Lili
$ | 220 181 670 | WEBSITE

Many of the best burger spots in Matosinhos are trendy destinations with long waits and premium price tags. Hamburgueria Lili stands in direct contrast to all that, which is exactly what makes it so special. The casual burger joint is a true neighborhood place with a welcoming vibe, exceptional service, affordable prices, and burgers that you bring friends across town for. Order a beer and enjoy the wonderful food.
CURB
$ | WEBSITE

Matosinhos has no shortage of trendy, upscale eateries vying to charge you €50 for a meal. And, right now, CURB is the most satisfying spot of the bunch. This burger joint first made its name as a hidden gem serving juicy, no-frills burgers. Now they have a reputation that’s very CURB All Grown Up. The standout order is a double cheeseburger for €18, and there are classic sodas and milkshakes.
While we do miss the simpler, more affordable days, the burgers at CURB—with their fresh meat, fragrant cheese, and fluffy buns—are just as delicious as anything from the start.
MARIANUS Hamburgueres Artesanais

This unassuming burger spot is the more casual sibling of the city’s upscale dining scene, and it happens to be tucked away on a side street off the main drag. It’s easy to miss among the surrounding shops and bustling foot traffic, but when you discover it, you’ll get a standout meal full of super-elevated (albeit reasonably priced) burger joint staples.
There’s the Marianus burger with perfectly cooked Angus beef, American chicken burgers that ooze with savory juices, and a garlic mayo dipping sauce that you’ll want to slather on everything. The combination of these delicious things will run you close to $20, but wow, it’s good.
Chapa Quente – Brazilian Traditional Burger

Burger joints can be overwhelming. The good news is, if you’re in Matosinhos, you’re just steps away from Chapa Quente—a restaurant that, despite focusing on Brazilian cuisine, isn’t intimidating. It’s just a warm place to relax, whether Brazilian food is your thing or not. Most dishes are Brazilian and involve lots of flavor.
We like to stick with the classics, like juicy Picanha, pulled pork burger, x-tudo, and tapioca dice served with a generous side of freshness that’ll make you consider booking a flight to Brazil.
H3 Vila do Conde Porto Fashion Outlet

The juicy burgers at H3 might remind you of a classic American diner burger joint that rhymes with “Shake Shack,” which is probably the point. This semi-hidden counter spot—located within the literal food court of a fashion outlet—is one of Porto’s best affordable quick stops, so don’t be deterred by the bustling mall setting (or limited seating near the registers).
Around lunchtime you’ll find a line of shoppers and travelers ordering plates of beef patties topped with melted cheese, plus maybe a side of fries or two. Join them and make sure to ask for extra ketchup.
H3

H3 in Matosinhos feels like a burger joint on the verge of turning into a full-blown comfort food destination. Its straightforward setup is full of solo diners and small groups, grabbing quick bites, and a simple menu if you care to focus on quality between rounds of chips. The bunless burger option named ‘Cheese’ comes with sautéed onions and cheese sauce, and while they don’t overload it with extras, you still get plenty of flavor from the sides.
The burger is cooked as ordered and comes with plentiful potato chips, making for a simple and satisfying meal option that pairs well with rice for a quick dinner choice.
Restaurante Peebz
$$$ | 226 104 004 | WEBSITE

It’s perfectly natural to believe you’ve found the best burger in Matosinhos at Peebz. You’ll sip homemade lemonade in a pleasant, family-friendly atmosphere and eat fresh, homemade burgers that elevate casual dining, like a juicy beef patty piled high with abundant potatoes. Reasonable doesn’t mean basic, though. The friendly staff’s attentive service shines through every recommendation, and the made-fresh-not-heated meals arrive with generous portions.
It’s all the quality and heart of a top-tier burger joint without skimping on the comfort, so make this a repeat visit for as long as your appetite allows.
Maynard’s Burgers – Campo 24 de agosto

Not even the warmest family welcome can fill the simple, functional space inside this bustling burger joint near Campo 24 de agosto. But if you can get past Maynard’s no-frills ambiance (or lack thereof), this all-day spot reveals its redeeming qualities: an American-style menu that fills whatever craving is left in your day’s schedule.
That could be a hand-patted beef burger in the afternoon, a post-work basket of crinkle-cut fries with a cold beer, or a surprisingly satisfying vegetarian option during a casual lunch with friends. You’ll know you found the place once you spot the mom and son working cheerfully behind the counter.
Simplex Virtus

Quiet charm and craft beer bliss: those are the main reasons we send friends to Simplex Virtus. This calming restaurant is adorned with homely touches, soothing soundtracks, and, of course, amazing burgers. While the atmosphere stays peaceful throughout the evening, we like to head over early to experience the full relaxed vibe (read: secure the best seats).
Savor tremendous burgers at the table—the Do Porto burger is dangerously delicious—and appreciate all the thoughtful details, then wonder why it took you this long to discover English cuisine done this well.
