York, ON has its share of hyped fast food spots. Places with drive-thrus trending on social feeds. Overexposed chains your cousin from Toronto visited ages ago. Joints you keep hearing about. Again. And again. And… again. Some are tasty, some are not, and some are cheap enough that it doesn’t matter. Before you decide to queue up or make that late-night run, consult this guide.
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen
$ | (416) 604-7404 | WEBSITE

A while back, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen underwent some corporate restructuring that left a few regulars feeling uneasy about the chain’s direction. That created some initial skepticism but, if we’re being honest, the quality at this Louisiana-style fast food spot in York has remained consistently solid. The clean, pleasant dining area—a bright, modern space with no lingering smell of burnt oil—still impresses (especially if you’re grabbing a booth with a group).
But the food is genuinely satisfying. Stick with the chicken tenders and you’re golden or, even better, come by for one of their signature sandwiches with the variety of dips. The staff, including Malek, Preenita, Harsh, Nisha, and Preneetha, provide the kind of quick, friendly service that makes the whole experience work, with the manager offering clear directions even during busy times. At reasonable prices, it’s a reliable choice when you need something fast and tasty.
A&W Canada
$ | (416) 410-4421 | WEBSITE

Securing a late-night meal at A&W Canada is done the old-fashioned way: pulling into the drive-thru while whispering “please please please please”. The legendary fast-food spot’s York location is our highest-rated late-night option in town. While more efficient, and with a different menu, A&W is instantly the most reliable bite in York and the fresh-and-savory punch of the sausage and egg breakfast sandwich alone makes getting strategic for a midnight run worth it.
Xaraf Restaurant
$$ | (647) 748-5844 | WEBSITE

The fast-food joint of all fast-food joints, Xaraf Restaurant’s reputation reaches far beyond this town. You don’t come to this York spot looking for ambiance, or in search of Ontario’s best dining experience. This is a no-frills, fluorescent-lit eatery with apron-wearing staff who look like they’ve been battling the cold since their first shift. Probably thanks to the noise levels that make any conversation about how generous the portions are impossible to hear.
Church’s Texas Chicken
$ | (416) 242-7866 | WEBSITE

This Texas-inspired chicken joint is run by Karan, Tekie, and Wisdom, an alarmingly efficient crew, and maybe that’s why everything in this York location runs so smoothly. Counters gleam, baskets of crunchiest chicken shine, but the star of the restaurant (namely, the new flavor Texas red on their wings) delivers. Church’s wants to be welcoming, but also wants you satisfied in minutes so the next person can come in to taste their amazing burgers.
Pizza Hut
$ | (416) 787-4500 | WEBSITE

Ekta and Sarthak are everything we all want in a pizza team. They’re friendly, they’re professional, and they make excellent gluten-free pizzas. This Pizza Hut is conveniently located on the roadside at Eglinton and Dufferin, and we’d come day or night for the welcoming atmosphere alone. The food can be great when you customize correctly, and we’ve found some veggie toppings have been inconsistent across different visits.
But whether you come for a family meal or a quick lunch with someone you haven’t seen in a while, you’re guaranteed to have a very, very pleasant dining experience.
Osmow’s Shawarma
$ | (416) 760-9888 | WEBSITE

The Verdict: The spotless counters, generous portions, and chicken on the rocks with spice levels that hit just right—we’re obsessed with this place, and you should be too.
Subway
$ | (416) 410-7827 | WEBSITE

Subway is one of York’s most reliable fast food spots, for very good reason. It was the first place to really do made-to-order sandwiches as they should be done, in a clean dining area that was modern in the 2000s and now is unique to itself. The fact it’s open 24/7 makes this institution special during late nights but it has an aura all day long. The prices are reasonable, the Veggie Delight is satisfying, and its fresh-as-can-be M&M cookies are one of York’s most popular treats.
The Jerk Box
$ | (416) 792-5375 | WEBSITE

A meal at The Jerk Box probably ranks highly on any budget-conscious foodie’s list of greatest joys. This hidden gem in York is wonderfully affordable—a generous curried chicken plate is around $12—but if you can look past the inevitable line-related mild impatience and its word-of-mouth reputation, you’ll find some of the best Caribbean food in the area. Trying to get a seat during peak hours will probably make you want to sigh. We encourage patience and a smile. It’s worth it.
