When Oakland native and food writer Maya Chen plans a dinner out in the Bay Area, she has her tried-and-true spots. But when she set out to compile the definitive guide for 2026, she made herself a bucket list of Greek tavernas and ouzeries to visit one last time before finalizing her rankings.
Souvla

I don’t know how they do that lamb salad. It’s almost like it’s west coast fusion. You know with dishes how they can blend traditions, where it’s authentic at heart but modern in execution? That’s kind of how Souvla does their lamb salad. It’s insane. The warm fries are crispy and well seasoned, and the chicken sandwich comes with this flavorful sauce that just works. Then there’s the soft serve with cherry topping—perfectly balanced in sweetness, though I wish they offered more size options.
The place has this beautiful, authentic decor with a modern ambiance that just feels pleasant. Service is friendly and great, though things did feel a bit rushed as closing time neared. I’m already looking forward to trying their wines, bowls, and yogurt next time. Overall, Souvla leaves you full, satisfied, and definitely coming back for more.
Oasis Grill

Oasis Grill… me and my friends always try to make it a point when we get together in Oakland, that’s where we go. We share some falafel wraps and catch up in this warm, inviting spot with beautiful tile mosaics.
Moussaka Mediterranean Kitchen
$$ | (510) 850-5020 | WEBSITE

This is the spot you swing by after a long day, maybe around 7 or 8 in the evening, and you’ll see the place buzzing with folks digging into plates, sharing stories, and just soaking up the vibe. It’s a solid meal and it’s a welcoming space. They’ve got warm, rustic décor with cozy lighting that makes you want to linger. I’m all about their lavash bread—I can’t stand dry, brittle flatbreads.
Lately, I’ve been leaning into the Adana kebap wrap, just because I don’t always want the heavier lamb shank, though that’s fantastic too. Your falafel can’t be too dense, either, though—the kind that crumbles all over. Moussaka’s has it down.
Nick The Greek Berkeley
$ | (510) 570-2930 | WEBSITE

Nick The Greek Berkeley is a solid spot with such a reliable vibe. I love their gyro bowl with pork belly. For me, pork belly can be a little too fatty or heavy, you know? But their kitchen does a good job of making it work with the entire bowl. I mean, they’re consistent. They’re a great fast-food joint. This dish is something that I would typically skip, but because I trust them and their entire menu, I do.
Nick The Greek Berkeley really delivers satisfaction for everyone who walks through that door.
Ikaros Greek Restaurant (Takeout & Catering)
$$ | (510) 899-4400 | WEBSITE

Ikaros Greek Restaurant is something I always recommend for locals to experience authentic Greek flavors you’d never get at a chain spot. When you order the Lamb Chops, it’s like a ritual: once they start preparing them to order, you know you’re in for something special. They focus on takeout only now at the Adeline Food Hall, so you can’t even dine in.
They have these folks who, when someone orders catering, they come through with exceptional service and delicious food like roasted salmon and vegetarian moussaka.
Troy

I add the spicy sauce sometimes. I’m more of a gyro guy. The cheat code is that there’s a similar wrap at a Greek spot in San Francisco, which we have in the Bay Area, but I don’t think it’s ever as good as the one at Troy.
The Parthenon
$$ | (415) 400-4405 | WEBSITE

They take the pita bread and they tear it and they’re able to scoop the hummus perfectly. Every time I try it, it just crumbles everywhere. I don’t know how they do it.
Cafe Elena
$ | (415) 543-8933 | WEBSITE

The first time I went to Cafe Elena, I was really hungry, I’m not gonna lie. The aromas were amazing and everyone was chatting happily. I was just in love with the place. Then, all of a sudden, this Chicken Shawarma came to the table and we were supposed to share it with everybody. I took two bites of it and I just immediately hid it from everybody and ate the whole thing. I need to go back less hungry to make sure it’s as good as I thought it was.
ALA Mediterranean Grill & Mezzes
$$ | (510) 263-8226 | WEBSITE

That shepherd salad they do is so out of this world good. There’s honestly nothing like it in Oakland. It’s crisp but refreshing. It’s just vibrant pockets of flavor. I don’t know how they do it. The dressing and the herbs they put on, it’s just beautiful.
The Park Street Tavern
$$ | (510) 671-2867 | WEBSITE

I randomly needed to get a quick dinner before an event, so I went into The Park Street Tavern. I was blown away by it. I ordered the spanakopita, ate it all, and was so amazed by it that I ordered the Greek salad and then ate it all, again. I love Greek specialties, a flavorful spanakopita, especially in Oakland in the evening. It’s fantastic. It satisfies you. I like when my taste buds start to tingle a little bit ’cause it’s so delicious. That’s when you know it’s hitting.
