Guimarães isn’t just Portugal’s historic cradle. It’s a full-fledged Japanese food destination in its own right. You can start with delicate sashimi, savor a steaming bowl of ramen for lunch, and then dig into some pretty spectacular wagyu beef for dinner—all within the city’s medieval walls. From traditional sushi counters to modern izakayas, Guimarães offers an authentic taste of Japan in the heart of Minho.
Chalé do Park (Miyuki)

It’s impossible to glance at Chalé do Park and not be drawn in by the promise of their sensational sushi. During the evening, this Japanese fusion spot is alive with the gentle hum of conversation and the clink of chopsticks. Things settle into a serene rhythm later on, when families celebrating special occasions can be seen enjoying the incredible view from the window tables. The impeccable sashimi ranks high on our list for its fresh, high-quality cuts and delicate presentation.
But if you’re craving something sweet to finish, the matcha mochis—soft, flavorful rice cakes—will absolutely delight.
Kobe Lin Sushi

This cozy spot has been serving fresh sushi, temakis, and sashimi in Guimaraes for years. The prices remain fair: an a la carte buffet plate starts at €15. It’s fresh, with high-quality fish, and best enjoyed with the standout temakis—featuring perfectly seasoned rice that somehow tastes both delicate and satisfying. Order your personalized meal by number, or grab a table and soak in the pleasant atmosphere where regulars praise the attentive service.
One bite and you’ll understand why it’s become a regional favorite.
Nagoya

Even if the only measure were the sheer volume of sushi available during their all-you-can-eat rodízio, this Japanese restaurant would earn its reputation. But that sushi, which is available for takeout on other days too, is exceptional. The friendly staff who run this place ensure guests with dietary restrictions like lactose intolerance are well cared for, and their cozy atmosphere produces delicate rolls, nigiri with perfectly seasoned rice, and so much more.
Each $25 rodízio has a slightly different selection—count yourself lucky if you get the salmon avocado roll and the creamy miso soup. These affordable feasts go on for two hours—a delicious marathon of a meal—and they do a great job of boxing up the leftovers.
Sushi & Grill

This spot in Guimaraes is almost always the answer to “Where should we eat?” on a Friday evening after 7pm. Space is tight, but you’ll feel at home quickly after sliding past the table next to you as you find your seat. Settle into a spot at the cozy tables where you’ll be surrounded by clean, organized surroundings, and share a meal of francesinha, medallion, cod with cream, chops, and chicken breast for around 38€.
You’ll receive them on simple plates, but though the presentation is straightforward, the steak with mushroom sauce, along with the other dishes, offers some of the best-tasting food around—all at affordable prices ranging from 5.50 to 7€ per dish, with attentive and friendly staff making the experience pleasant.
Asiático Restaurante Buffet
$$ | WEBSITE

With a wide and varied buffet, Asiático Restaurante Buffet is a great place to take that indecisive friend group who can barely decide on what movie to watch, much less a restaurant for dinner. Fresh sushi rolls and hot pasta dishes join crowd pleasers like all-you-can-eat options and included desserts. In the modern mall setting, a pleasant dining area with wheelchair accessibility is your cue to ask the staff—a quick and friendly bunch—what to try first.
Our favorite is the value, a satisfying mix of quality food, affordable price, and kid-friendly amenities.
TABERNA SHAKAI

Gather your friends for a laid-back evening at this cozy spot that excels in Japanese cuisine. You’ll want to try their sushi selection, especially the special cooked options for those who prefer something warm. Plan to arrive with time to spare (or better yet, check their daily specials online) if you hope to sample their signature sushi rolls, which feature fresh ingredients and creative combinations. They’re outstanding, but availability can be limited.
Hanami (Hanami Sushi Braga Parque)

You can grab a decent movie ticket for around €8. Or, you can choose the excellent price/quality ratio at Hanami, a Japanese spot in Braga Parque, and watch your order being prepared right before your eyes. Even though it’s located near elevators with wheelchair access via a mini ramp, there’s no fancy view—it’s in a clean, customer-exclusive area with a straightforward, functional space. But the delicious and crispy flavors are the reason you’re here.
Come for a quick lunch that feels more satisfying than it costs, or with friends or family, and get the friendly service flowing as dishes like menus 2 and 7 are served quickly and accurately.
BOKA

Guimarães has plenty of Japanese spots, but intimate, chef-driven BOKA is one of the finest. The sushi tray (with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, eel, shrimp, and scallop) is the undeniable star of their extensive menu, though ideally you should sample each of their hot dishes eventually. Aim to arrive before the evening dinner crowd, or linger admiring the serene minimalist décor with its warm wood accents and soft lighting while you wait.
There’s no outdoor seating, but the historic city center is just a short stroll away.
Seiko

Seiko—not to be confused with other Japanese spots in Guimarães—is a local favorite for sushi lovers. The restaurant offers a familiar and friendly atmosphere, where customers can enjoy beautiful sushi presentations from skilled chefs who consistently surprise with new creations. The all-you-can-eat deal (including miso soup and rolls) will run you about €25. Bring cash, and sit at the counter for a quick lunch so you can watch the chefs prepare each roll with careful precision.
It’s less like a meal, more like a soft and fresh, sushi-flavored experience—and enjoying plate after plate is easy.
Mikado Braga

Mikado Braga serves fantastic sushi, but the personalized table service at this quality spot with a relaxed atmosphere is top-notch, too. The combination—and their fresh product selection—makes it great for a satisfying dining experience with a few friends. If you want something special, trust the attentive staff like Érica to meet your preferences: a varied sushi selection with fresh ingredients and great quality. And if you’re selective, stick with the classic options.
We also love the overall experience, the friendly service, and the delicious sushi here.
Sushi&Co.

Guimarães locals talk a big game about their traditional Portuguese cuisine, but that’s just because they haven’t tried Sushi&Co. yet. The neighborhood favorite has been serving generous platters of fresh sushi at excellent prices since it opened, and it remains a great place for quality Japanese food and affordable meals, filled right up to the brim.
Bring a big group to the cozy dining area, and always get the fresh vegetarian options, the well-prepared sushi with generous amounts of fish and rice, and at least one platter with those extra pieces they always include, with a side of appreciation for the friendly, helpful staff who make English speakers feel welcome.
Temple San

You’ll find Temple San in Braga, where it’s become the go-to spot for all-you-can-eat sushi in the area. The move: head over for lunch or dinner and load up on fresh nigiri, maki rolls, sashimi, and whatever else catches your eye from the digital menu screens that let you customize each order. $25 per person will get you far, but no one’s stopping you from trying multiple rounds of your favorites.
If you come with family or friends, plan on enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and fast service that keeps everything flowing smoothly from kitchen to table.
Omakase

Omakase is one of the standout Japanese restaurants in Guimaraes, and it’s our top pick for a special night out. Go for the tasting menu and a selection of sushi, like the delicate, expertly crafted nigiri or a platter of various fish and seafood prepared with traditional techniques. Omakase is ideal for intimate dinners and celebratory occasions, but if you’re on a budget and craving some authentic flavors, you can order à la carte dishes as well.
Watami

Watami is located in the heart of Guimaraes, and its reputation for spectacular speed of service is one of the best in town. (This makes it a popular spot for quick lunches—so popular that you’ll often see a line out the door during peak hours.) The menu is Japanese-focused and on the reasonable side for the area—a plate of delicious possums and sushi costs around €18—but the portion sizes are abundant.
If you’re not trying to spend that kind of cash on a weeknight, grabbing a quick bite at the counter, or at one of the cozy tables in the pleasant atmosphere, is a great idea.
