Mac’s Sushi
$ | WEBSITE

Even by Hamilton standards, this place is a standout. The good news is that Mac’s Sushi is a standout that comes with fantastic sushi. It’s always popular, but the space is inviting, and there’s a cozy dining area that’s perfect for enjoying fresh fish (even during busy nights). And as with its reputation for quality, a lot of things on the Japanese menu are meant to be savored.
Aichi Japan
$ | (289) 389-5234 | WEBSITE

Aichi Japan is a Japanese grill spot in the food court, and the menu has straightforward options, including homemade chicken teriyaki with great sauce and excellent wonton soup. The setup looks like many food court counters these days (simple and functional with the grill in front), but it’s a fresh place to grab a quick meal, and the service is attentive with a smile. Plus, Aichi Japan’s kid-friendly menu with both spicy and mild options is one of the best family-friendly features in the area.
Ajio Sushi Korean & Japanese Restaurant
$$ | (905) 526-8888 | WEBSITE

Hamilton has more sushi spots than any other city in Ontario, but finding one that consistently delivers quality is another story. Our last count was fifteen, and they’re all operating within a few miles of each other. And, despite our skepticism about fusion concepts, Ajio Sushi Korean & Japanese Restaurant is one of those places that gets it right.
They have things like the impressive sushi love boat that arrives fresh and beautifully arranged, a delicious lobster roll that tastes like it was made with fish just pulled from the ocean (that’s a compliment), and incredible stone bowls that are very filling. Most dishes range from $12-$25, and it works for a casual lunch or a fun dinner with friends. The friendly staff often brings out free appetizers like Korean pancake in the evenings, and the mochi desserts are highly recommended.
Just be prepared for a possible wait on busy days—but the experience makes it well worth it.
Sio Shokudo(Sio bento)
$ | (647) 872-5562 | WEBSITE

Hamilton’s Barton Street East is typically known for its industrial warehouses, but Sio Shokudo is bringing authentic warmth to the neighborhood. Delicious Japanese dishes are served in a cozy space with manga-themed decor and an atmosphere that might’ve been sourced from a family-run shop in Osaka. All the recipes feel like they originate from home, specifically a Japanese grandmother’s kitchen.
And after trying the rich tonkotsu ramen, savory unagi don, or comforting curry katsu, we wish we could transport it all back in time so that our own younger selves could’ve grown up with this food, too.

We love this consistently good Japanese restaurant in Hamilton. With the option of either ordering through Uber Eats for buy-one-get-one deals or directly from their website for better prices, this spot works well for both a special occasion like a birthday or something a bit more low-key.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re starting with the crispy gyoza and refreshing seaweed salad with a little spice, sharing the assorted platter and black dragon rolls with extra unagi sauce, or on a solo mission to enjoy the outstanding takoyaki and spring rolls—coming here is always a great choice. Plus, the staff are super polite and take their time to make everything look appealing.
Social Lounge 8090

This cozy Japanese spot is one of our favorite hangout places in Hamilton. The main dining area is calm and soothing, and there’s a separate, well-lit lounge section that’s great for just enjoying board games. The menu has authentic dishes like BBQ Ramen Noodles, Volcano Ramen, and entrees like the highly enjoyed bento rice bowls or some very flavorful Hokkaido milk tea.
Hibachi Teppanyaki & Bar (Hamilton)

At this lively Japanese teppanyaki spot, it’s common to see families celebrating birthdays while chefs dramatically flip shrimp tails into their hats right at the table. But you’ll also see groups of friends sharing sake bombs at the bar, and coworkers in business casual attempting to equally split the massive seafood platters.
Hibachi Teppanyaki & Bar expertly walks the tightrope of feeling interactive without being chaotic—a balance that extends to its service with staff like Musa and Sabu who are both super friendly and professionally attentive, making the whole experience welcoming and fun.
COZY SUSHI
$ | (905) 528-5444 | WEBSITE

Getting slightly jostled by a friendly server or a neighboring customer is all part of the experience at Cozy Sushi, one of the city’s best Japanese restaurants. This tightly packed take-out spot feels less like a room full of strangers and more like a big communal gathering, whether you’re waiting for your generous tray of fresh salmon nigiri with soft rice, or having a solo meal with beautifully presented tuna rolls that exceed expectations.
And while you’re more likely to overhear loving complaints about Hamilton’s professional sports teams than whole conversations in Japanese, there’s enough phenomenal hospitality and free extra sushi as a kind gesture to convince you that Cozy Sushi is the Tokyo of Hamilton.

Some dishes are a bit standard, but you’ll forget all about them once you’re lost in the delicious dumplings and high-quality cooked dishes.
