It’s impossible to say ‘Mexican food in Eagle Pass’ without tasting the smoky aroma of carne asada grilling under the Texas sun, or imagining generations sharing stories over steaming bowls of menudo. These essential border-town institutions honor tradition while some add modern flair to classic tacos al pastor or enchiladas verdes. Here are our favorite Mexican restaurants in Eagle Pass.
Taco Bell
$ | (830) 773-9649 | WEBSITE

This fast-food Mexican spot in Eagle Pass has been serving the community for years, and is the kind of reliable place that makes us say, ‘goddammit I love Taco Bell’ every time we drive by. The vegetarian options and quick-service menus are straightforward, but you can’t go wrong with the Baja Blast zero. Get it with its full flavor and lack of watered-down taste, and make sure to appreciate the efficient service.
Otherwise, try one of the salads or family-friendly meals (like the affordable combos in the spacious dining area). Feel free to bring your kids and appetite for a full family experience.
La Cabañita Breakfast Tacos
$ | (830) 757-9090 | WEBSITE

This Eagle Pass favorite is known for its breakfast tacos. When you pull up to the lively street, you’ll have to navigate the busy parking situation before you make your way inside. Settle in at a table and you’ll feel like you’ve entered a fun, welcoming space, with Disney characters hidden throughout and servers keeping things moving.
Breakfast tacos are the thing to order here (we recommend the perfectly cooked huevos rancheros over a standard taco), but we also love their moist barbacoa and fresh, tasty offerings.
Parrilla De San Miguel
$$ | (830) 757-3100 | WEBSITE

At Parrilla De San Miguel in Eagle Pass, there’s a good chance a regular will sit down next to you, give a nod to their server, and 10 minutes later have gobernador shrimp tacos, ceviche acapulco, excellent salsas, and a cold drink on their table. Take after them. This Mexican spot has great takes on traditional and modern dishes, with plenty of fun and cozy charm. And if you prefer strong flavors, Parrilla De San Miguel is worth seeking out.
El Zarape Grill
$ | (830) 757-5364 | WEBSITE

The El Zarape Grill breakfast experience should not take place without homemade flour tortillas. We repeat: You must order tacos with some sort of stew filling, or at least a side of their excellent savory stews to wrap in your tortillas. The warm, pliable tortillas at this Eagle Pass Mexican institution are made so fresh that a chef could use them as the foundation for any morning creation. El Zarape Grill staff expertly layer the flavorful, hearty stew fillings onto sturdy tortillas.
These delicious tortillas, which are perfectly sized, act as the ideal vessel for all of the toppings.
Rio Grande Restaurant
$ | (830) 757-1600 | WEBSITE

Every table at this no-frills Mexican spot in downtown Eagle Pass automatically gets a basket of warm tortilla chips and a bowl of fresh salsa, and you should keep those things company by ordering the Queso Panela con Chile plate, a generous serving of Chilaquiles, and a cup of their surprisingly good coffee. Place your order quickly because the servers are busy when it gets crowded, and don’t ask them to rush your food if you want to stay on their good sides.
Note that this place is small and can get packed, and they don’t take reservations.
La Parrilla
$ | (830) 758-0646 | WEBSITE

A casual Mexican eatery with a welcoming, kid-friendly vibe in Eagle Pass, La Parrilla consistently delivers high-quality food and excellent service. We’ll give them a pass for the occasional crowded weekend since they’re partly responsible for this place. The food here is absurdly good. From the potatoes and fajitas, to the homemade mini flour and corn tortillas, to the carne asada, to the enchiladas in red or green sauce, we haven’t eaten anything here that didn’t impress.
Even the quesadillas (definitely not a fancy dish, but we’ll let it slide) are taken to another level. Whether you’re here for a family dinner or showing your out-of-town friends a great local spot, you will leave satisfied.
Molcajete Cocina Mexicana
$ | (830) 325-7058 | WEBSITE

We always hope that historic renovations are as good as the one the Molcajete team has pulled off in the old downtown house. Molcajete Cocina Mexicana combines everything you want in an authentic Mexican restaurant (calm atmosphere, outstanding service, true Mexican flavors) with traditional touches like the homemade mole that elevates every dish. We particularly love the lunch service, which is like if breakfast and dinner had a brilliant middle child.
Garcias Mexican Restaurant . Buffet
$ | (830) 752-7669 | WEBSITE

Garcias is still good after more than a decade in Eagle Pass. It remains one of the few Mexican buffets worth anyone’s appetite, partly because of the sheer spectacle of how much food moves through here and partly because the traditional staples still warm us into contented satisfaction. Load up on carnitas and carne guisado with homemade tortillas on the side, and don’t miss the breakfast menudo. We repeat: Do not miss the breakfast menudo they serve in the morning.
We can’t confirm what happens if you do miss this menudo, but we imagine it involves regretting it while eating somewhere less authentic.
Takitos Con Sabor de Chavarria
$ | (830) 513-3461 | WEBSITE

Takitos Con Sabor de Chavarria feels like a cross between a taqueria and a ramen shop in all the best ways. Ideally you want to order ahead through their app, so you can settle in for the fresh preparation that makes everything worth the wait. Everything here is flavorful, from the “standout” Quesabirria tacos with their juicy, well-seasoned meat to the highly anticipated Birria Marruchan ramen.
We’re partial to the birria tacos, a masterpiece of toasted tortillas and consomé that might just be the best we’ve had. You’ll be satisfied after these, but get the free elote for first-time app users anyway.
Cafe Los Reyes
$ | (830) 773-7372 | WEBSITE

The search for authentic Mexican breakfast in Eagle Pass doesn’t require crossing the border, and Cafe Los Reyes is proof of that. The spot is a family-owned Mexican restaurant, meaning that it’s where you should go for breakfast tacos—warm, fresh, and generously filled—and more importantly, barbacoa guisada. It’s very similar to traditional stewed beef, but it’s slow-cooked and wonderfully tender, and works perfectly on homemade flour tortillas.
Other than that, you’ll find piping hot home-cooked meals, super fresh ingredients, and a pretty amazing breakfast experience here.
Gaona’s Mexican Bite
$ | (830) 421-5040 | WEBSITE

Eagle Pass sits right on the border with Mexico, so it’s no surprise that one of our favorite Mexican spots is in this Texas town. There’s nothing touristy about Gaona’s. It’s a restaurant that exists to serve its community—and to make a damn fine breakfast taco. This isn’t a monstrous, too-big-to-eat affair. The homemade tortillas are warm, perfectly sized, and filled with mouthwatering potatoes and beans.
The menudo and migas are both exemplary, and if you’ve never had pepino lemonade, you should try one here.
