North of the Border 1
$ | (847) 426-4242 | WEBSITE

If you head to North of the Border for Taco Tuesday, you should also do margaritas and dessert. The casual, no-frills spot—a popular destination for affordable and authentic Mexican cuisine—serves up a wide selection of dishes, like chicken and steak fajitas that are as flavorful as the salsas they’re served with. And they also do flan. The menu features options for vegetarians and vegans, but a good rule of thumb is just to order one of everything, especially if avocado is involved.
Tamazula Tacos
$ | (847) 428-3087 | WEBSITE

Tucked inside a busy plaza in Carpentersville, there’s a small but clean space that’s serving up authentic Mexican tacos. And generous portions that won’t disappoint. And also steak tacos that some rate 8/10, and a simple atmosphere without music or alcohol. Bring the whole family so you can enjoy the good prices, and keep the meal going with some fast, friendly service.
PHO SAIGON
$ | (224) 802-8006 | WEBSITE

PHO SAIGON is a local Asian eatery near Woodman’s grocery store, and if it’s not in your regular rotation for authentic Vietnamese cuisine, it should be. But hidden in plain sight right inside is their lunch special, which is only available during midday hours. We love their tender and flavorful pho, and also the customizable banh mi, which is $17 for the pho, two egg rolls, and a soda.
If it’s been a long week and you cannot possibly make a single decision, ask them to make it with their signature chili oil and Sriracha.
Sticky Fingers Kitchen
$ | (224) 777-7859 | WEBSITE

At Sticky Fingers Kitchen in Carpentersville, you can dig into some seriously crispy, juicy chicken tenders that feel like a hug from your grandma. Or, you can dive into their highly-rated shrimp and tender combo with that standout Spicy Fingers sauce instead. We like to do it all.
Grab the shrimp combo or some fresh wings with a cold beer, and then switch to daily specials like Lobster Sundays just as the friendly staff brings out that bucket of lollipops and bottle of Frank’s Hot Sauce for the table.
La Michoacana Ilusion
$ | (224) 286-1100 | WEBSITE

At La Michoacana Ilusion in Carpentersville, a platter of fresh tacos with all the fixings and a cold horchata will run you $18, and a generous serving of carne asada with rice and beans plus a refreshing agua fresca is $22. Don’t overthink it, just trust me—in a landscape of overpriced fusion spots and underwhelming chain restaurants, those are some genuinely satisfying values.
Y Taqueria
$$ | WEBSITE

Is it a taqueria? Is it a margarita bar? Is it a taqueria where everybody’s drinking margaritas? Don’t worry about such trivial things. It’s Y Taqueria in Carpentersville, and it’s very lively—think vibrant colors, festive lighting, and bustling tables—but they also happen to make some very craveable Mexican food. The margarita is an exemplary fresh blend, but we also like the tacos with expertly seasoned fillings, and the overall experience, with tasty meals and enjoyable drinks.
Rosati’s Pizza Carpentersville
$ | (847) 844-3400 | WEBSITE

At this family-friendly pizza spot in Carpentersville, you can share deep dish slices while you debate the merits of thin crust versus thick with your crew. Don’t overlook the menu of classic options, like the hearty deep dish, crispy thin crust, and especially the perfectly balanced cheese pizza. The cozy side room with its warm honey wood finish and fireplace makes it an ideal spot for gatherings, where the caring staff ensures every order arrives just right.
Masi’s Pizza & Catering
$ | (847) 426-3700 | WEBSITE

From the same team that perfected thin-crust pies, Masi’s Pizza & Catering takes a classic Italian-American approach to comfort food. There’s a pizza—except it’s crispy and loaded with flavorful toppings—and a panzarotti that’s delightfully indulgent from being deep-fried. You will quickly eat too much, which is when you should explore the menu. Try the Italian Beef, and the Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo.
Denny’s
$ | (847) 836-7107 | WEBSITE

There are a lot of great diners in Carpentersville. If you want a casual spot with friendly service and good value, go to Denny’s. Grab a booth in the large dining room, pair your steak and eggs with some crispy hashbrowns, and then settle in for a comfortable meal. The staff like Chris, Carolina, and Vanessa provide great recommendations, and the to-go orders are quick and appealing. This place is definitely a better value than IHOP.
Burrito Guacamole 2
$ | (224) 699-9022 | WEBSITE

Burritos are a truly great family food, especially when they involve ultra fresh tortillas and are stuffed with fillings that spill forth like treasures after one too many bites of a salsa-spiked guacamole. Put the steak torta at the top of your list, then work your way down. This Mexican restaurant also does delicious authentic dishes, like chicken sopes served with rice and beans for sharing.
Noc Noc Wood Bar
$$ | (224) 802-2150 | WEBSITE

The next time you’re desperately searching for a restaurant to eat at in Carpentersville, just go to Noc Noc Wood Bar instead. The lively spot with nice decor is great for escaping the ordinary, and enjoying something flavorful and satisfying. There’s a DJ on Saturdays for those who want to eat, drink, and dance in one place, but if you’d like to try the excellent daily specials like the Chopped Salad, head to the dining area any day of the week.
If you’re feeling particularly social, consider the special drinks before 10:00 pm on Thursdays.
La Alcancia
$ | (847) 428-1114 | WEBSITE

La Alcancia in Carpentersville comes from the owners Maggie and Jose—your first sign that the food here is going to be authentic. Bring a group, and order generously off the extensive menu—we like the el pastor tacos, the guacamole with its perfect presentation, and the juicy asada meat. Plus a platter combination, of course, like the lengua with rice and beans. It comes with fresh tortillas and homemade sauces, and tastes like the delicious comforting flavors of grandma’s cooking.

$ | (847) 551-3788 | WEBSITE

Chopsticks has $12 Chef Special Combo Fried rice and perfectly stuffed crab ragoons. Need we say more? The popular Chinese spot has a comfortable dining room where you can settle in with a steaming plate of fresh food and friendly service, and a few cozy booths where you can enjoy generous portions and affordable prices. They also have one of our favorite takeout deals in town: two entrees and an appetizer for $25.
Skeeter’s Saloon Inc
$ | (847) 428-4595 | WEBSITE

We’ve found ourselves at Skeeter’s Saloon more than once while looking for a laid-back spot in Carpentersville. And each time we walk in, we’re reminded that this friendly hole-in-the-wall has great pizza, and Skeet’s Treat is absolutely worth ordering. The next time you need a break from the usual, head here, grab a cold beer for about five bucks, play a few songs on the Jude Box, and try that signature treat. And then maybe just forget about whatever else you had planned for the evening.
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen
$ | (224) 293-2154 | WEBSITE

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is one of our favorite spots to grab sub-$10 fried chicken in Carpentersville. But for something a little quicker, head inside, where you can get a spicy chicken sandwich, crispy fries, and a buttery biscuit. The drive-thru lane is where you should grab-and-go, and the clean dining room is where you should enjoy a quiet family meal.
Culver’s
$ | (847) 649-3225 | WEBSITE

Culver’s is a fast food chain, but it also serves one of our favorite burgers in the area. The Crystal Lake location (with other locations throughout the Midwest) does butter burgers as well, and their signature item is a fresh, hot burger made efficiently. One visit here—sitting in the clean dining area with a meal and that butter burger—will leave you wondering why you would ever even consider another fast food spot when you could just be doing this instead.
