After years of searching for authentic flavors, it’s finally clear where to find them. And according to both local foodies and culinary historians, Gretna’s dining scene is a hidden treasure. We don’t argue with passionate eaters or Louisiana experts, so here are the restaurants serving dishes that are perfect for discovery—whether you’re craving Creole classics, Vietnamese pho, or even modern Southern fusion.
Los Compadres
$ | (504) 766-6160 | WEBSITE

Not only does Los Compadres offer some of our favorite Mexican dishes in Gretna, but this local restaurant also has some excellent menu surprises – like the delicious Nachos Texanos and the unique passion fruit margarita. And any of those things are perfect to enjoy (along with the friendly waitstaff) in the somewhat authentic, colorful & circus-like atmosphere.
Piccadilly Restaurants
$ | (504) 391-1063 | WEBSITE

Piccadilly Restaurants is a reliable family-friendly spot (it’s been serving Gretna for decades) with great vegetarian options and good food at reasonable prices. Ample parking and wheelchair accessibility make it convenient for everyone. The staff is generally friendly and treats children with care, though there was one unfortunate incident with a cashier named Nelissa whose behavior didn’t meet expectations. For a satisfying meal that won’t break the bank, this is a solid choice.
Empress Of China
$ | (504) 392-3939 | WEBSITE

It’s no secret we’re big fans of the Mandarin Chicken at Empress Of China. And now they have a menu where you can pick up a selection of fresh entrees, vegetables, sauces, and appetizers. All of which are perfect for bringing to a gathering (or eating at home).
Toast Gretna
$ | (504) 267-3260 | WEBSITE

This Gretna spot has crawfish toast, savory crepes, ratatouille & egg toast, and a pretty amazing play area for kids. Because you know what your brunch needs? Some heavenly aebelskivers.
Vinnie’s Sports Bar & Grill
$$ | (504) 393-0155 | WEBSITE

This is the original location of this classic sports bar (there are others in the area), though we love them all. Anything from their grill will be great for game day, such as the bacon cheeseburger, Jalapeño Belly Buster Burger, Double Bogey Fries, and much more. Everything is cooked fresh to order, and it’s all delicious.
Courthouse Cafe
$ | (504) 362-0753 | WEBSITE

While the cost of dining out continues to climb, thankfully some places still offer value beyond the price tag. That said, as pricey as a meal out can be these days, sometimes the experience makes it worthwhile. The Southern comfort food at Courthouse Cafe reminds us of the best part of those special occasion dinners. You’ll find dishes like the delicious fried shrimp with potato salad, and the standout ‘Green beans’ dish, which is a unique and savory take on the classic vegetable.
Gattuso’s Neighborhood Restaurant, Bar & Catering
$ | (504) 368-1114 | WEBSITE

This Gretna neighborhood spot is a lively collaboration between Louisiana comfort food traditions and the kind of generous hospitality that makes everyone feel at home. This means the dishes (like the gumbo that could make a Cajun grandmother shed a tear, or the po’boys so stuffed they resemble a Thanksgiving feast) are incredible. Plus they have fun desserts like the banana foster bread pudding that’s a favorite among regulars.
The atmosphere is welcoming and kid-friendly, with easy parking and wheelchair accessibility on the West Bank. Servers like Kali provide attentive care, checking on tables to ensure satisfaction. While some might find it a bit pricey, most agree it’s worth it for the quality and experience. From the moment you’re greeted at the door to the last bite of that bread pudding, Gattuso’s delivers the kind of meal that makes you want to return again and again.
Phở Bang Restaurant
$ | (504) 872-9002 | WEBSITE

Phở Bang is another casual Vietnamese pho spot in the Nola area – it’s the popular version of traditional pho joints. The big difference? They also offer gluten-free options. If you’re looking for tofu pho with beef broth or crispy egg rolls, then Phở Bang is your spot.
Thai D-Jing Restaurant
$ | (504) 766-0681 | WEBSITE

This little restaurant has quite a few things that are great for a casual meal, like various appetizers, crab rangoons, and chicken sticks. You can also ask them to customize your dish with different proteins, and then pick a glass of wine to go with it.
Legacy Kitchen’s Steak and Chop
$$ | (504) 608-6082 | WEBSITE

Along with serving some of Gretna’s best steaks (the 8oz filet, cooked to perfection, is one of the best in the area), Legacy Kitchen’s Steak and Chop also offers a variety of delectable dishes. This means you can get Cajun crawfish queso dip and jumbo grilled shrimp, along with comforting sides like the crawfish cornbread skillet and apple pie with ice cream.
Reginelli’s Pizzeria
$ | (504) 309-7448 | WEBSITE

This pizzeria has been a Gretna favorite for years, which is about how long it feels like I’ve been craving their cheesy bread. And Reginelli’s is a fantastic option for pizza and things like fresh salads with unique combinations. The pizza with homemade crust is our favorite, but you can’t go wrong with anything (the avocado-asparagus salad is also excellent). Order a Santa Margarita, too, while you’re at it.
