Many visitors to Lawrence stick to the main thoroughfares, but the true culinary soul of this town lies tucked away in its vibrant neighborhoods. Venture beyond the obvious to discover where locals are fiercely loyal to their corner trattorias, family-run delis, and cozy wine bars. This is where you’ll find Lawrence’s real flavor.
Bean & Berry
$ | (516) 758-7080 | WEBSITE

The vibrant acai bowls and unexpected pesto pizza are what keep us coming back to Bean & Berry, a cozy, colorful spot in Lawrence. The owner is incredibly sweet and welcoming, and now offers a menu of fresh crepes and gourmet coffee, plus pastries and those bowls served with their signature charm. The way they treat the atmosphere really delivers, though. It comes super cool in the décor, paired with games, couches, and that personal touch.
And it’s flavorful in their offerings, though some note it could use more seasoning. You can grab food to go from Bean & Berry, but the friendly staff and the cozy vibes in the space make it worth showing up for in person.
Sunflower Cafe- Lawrence
$$ | (516) 569-4522 | WEBSITE

You might drive past Sunflower Cafe on your way through Lawrence without noticing—it’s nestled in a cheerful strip with easy parking. The menu at this casual spot is impressively broad: think fresh sushi rolls, kosher pizzas with creative toppings, or hearty vegetarian entrees like stuffed peppers. Their dairy-free desserts, a rich chocolate torte with raspberry coulis served with house-brewed coffee, are one of the highlights.
The pricing leans toward special-occasion, with generous portions justifying the cost, alongside family-friendly options and a very reasonable (and quite popular, at $25 per person) kids’ menu. Take in the bright, clean dining room before you settle into the spacious booths facing the open kitchen area, where the cheerful staff keeps things moving.
Jerusalem Pizza
$ | (516) 569-0074 | WEBSITE

Casual yet comforting, Lawrence mainstay Jerusalem Pizza continues to satisfy locals with its friendly service, straightforward menu rooted in kosher tradition, and accommodating staff who genuinely care about their community. We’ve enjoyed their classic falafel, crispy on the outside and tender within, as well as their hearty veggie calzones and indulgent cheesy fries—all of which we hope remain staples for years to come.
Grab a booth near the window for a relaxed neighborhood vibe, and don’t forget to try their eggplant parmigiana or any of their other reliable pizzas before you head out.
Carlos & Gabby’s
$ | (516) 239-8226 | WEBSITE

There’s a lot of Mexican-inspired food in Lawrence, but the dishes from Carlos & Gabby’s will always be our favorite. They come with fresh ingredients and consistent flavors, and the menu features a wide variety of affordable options with a focus on quality. The “all-around dining” experience strikes a good balance, and it goes well with the excellent customer service, convenient parking, and prompt delivery.
Carlos & Gabby’s is one of the best remnants of the family-friendly dining scene in town, otherwise known for its great value. But their Mexican-inspired cuisine is one restaurant that pretty much everyone (including local food enthusiasts who frequent this popular spot) can agree on. Just know that it’s all about the food and service here, so if you can’t live without fancy décor, you’ll have to head elsewhere.
Playa Bowls
$ | (646) 558-7703 | WEBSITE

You’re bound to bump into a familiar face while waiting in line for your bowl at Playa Bowls, the vibrant Lawrence spot that’s become a neighborhood staple. They’ve been serving up fresh ingredients since opening, and while the menu has expanded over time, this bright, aesthetically pleasing location still maintains that friendly, efficient service regulars love.
They’ve been crafting their signature Açaí bowl with mango for years, alongside customizable options with Nutella and plenty of vegetarian and nondairy choices. Don’t miss their refreshing mango bowl or the chance to build your own creation with staff suggestions from their vast menu. Their helpfulness in handling any issues directly and remembering regulars’ orders is pretty great, too.
Lollibop Cafe & Play
$ | (516) 777-9625 | WEBSITE

Lollibop Cafe & Play’s family-friendly menu hits the mark every time. Their chocolate chip pancakes alone are worth a visit, with the fluffiest texture and perfectly sweet syrup. We love their penne alla vodka, the creamy cheese ravioli, and the always-appealing salads and paninis. The custom smoothies, with fresh fruit and yogurt blends, are a fun way to kick off your meal while munching on crispy fries dusted with salt.
This is a great lunch spot for parents and kids, with high chairs and a separate play space that quickly fills up with colorful toys and activities for hours of fun.
Ahuvas Grill Express
$ | (516) 239-0110 | WEBSITE

Ahuvas Grill Express is a cozy spot for a quick meal with the people you love, and regulars here tend to become family. The owner’s grandmother’s recipe means the kibe is on the menu, plus dishes that invariably include falafel. Or hummus. Start with one of the area’s best shawarma laffa, a generous portion of kibe, and a falafel—a crispy chickpea ball with tahini—before wandering through the menu looking for fresh flavors (we usually find them).
The compact dining room has a tiny open kitchen, a playlist that meanders from classic rock to modern pop, and a menu that nods to the restaurant’s namesake, the owner’s grandmother, Ahuvas. Her silky hummus with olive oil is a family tradition you don’t want to miss.
Patis Bakery
$ | (516) 980-0880 | WEBSITE

The generous dusting of powdered sugar on the counter at Patis Bakery speaks to the steady stream of sweet-toothed patrons who flock to this cozy gourmet bakery in the heart of Lawrence. The beautifully presented pastries, like the oversized croissants with house-made jam and the dulce de Leche kouign aman, showcase a commitment to quality and flavor. The morning might begin with a warm, gooey Pecan Cinnamon roll, its sticky sweetness perfectly balanced by a rich, expertly pulled latte.
Customized salads, with their many add-ons available at no extra charge, offer a fresh counterpoint, and the kitchen is happy to accommodate vegan requests. Patis’s commitment to being strictly kosher, cholov Yisroel, pas Yisroel, and yoshon is evident in every detail. The free parking lot is a practical blessing, and sitting at a sunlit table with a perfectly flaky pastry is the ideal way to savor the neighborhood’s unpretentious charm.
For a less formal but equally delicious option, simply ask the friendly staff to explain the daily specials.
Traditions
$$ | (516) 295-3630 | WEBSITE

Traditions’ well-earned reputation is built on two pillars: the affordable comfort food menu and the attentive service provided by its knowledgeable waitstaff. The old-fashioned table setting is welcoming on any night, with its charming presentation of coleslaw and pickles alongside generous portions of burgers, steaks, salads, and soup.
Traditions’ satisfying French fries, accommodating approach to dietary restrictions like salt-free menus, and reasonable prices for large parties make this a reliable, fulfilling spot we return to again and again.
Sherwood Diner
$ | (516) 371-4616 | WEBSITE

Sherwood Diner is one of our favorite versions of a classic American diner, a traditional neighborhood spot. The retro-styled counter makes everything fresh, including the pancakes for their breakfast platters and their all-day burgers with classic crispy bacon. Grab a pancake platter—a breakfast stack with sides of bacon, ham, and sausage—and a bottomless coffee, and then check out the nearby Lawrence streets (or one of the area’s best local shops) to make a morning of it.
Sherwood Diner’s owner George has other regulars in the neighborhood that are worth chatting with, like the friendly server Maryel and the loyal customers who make it feel like home.
Muscat Glatt
$$ | (516) 284-7313 | WEBSITE

We can’t think of Muscat Glatt without picturing their matbucha sauce arriving in a small ceramic bowl—the gateway to a spread of Moroccan-Israeli kosher comfort food. It might not be the fanciest presentation, but you’ll appreciate it as soon as you slather that sauce on warm pita, wrap tender shawarma inside it, or dip it into the pool of garlic aioli that golden french fries are piled beside.
Muscat Glatt is a vibrant spot to gather for a casual meal, and a quintessential Lawrence experience for families, when the accommodating owner personally checks on tables. Getting a table can be busy, especially on Friday nights, so if you can’t snag one—or want something more upscale—consider their catering service, which offers the same generous portions and fresh ingredients for events.
Lucky Boy
$$ | (516) 239-9352 | WEBSITE

There’s a warm glow spilling from the windows of Lawrence’s Lucky Boy, the kind of place that feels like home from the moment you step inside. The consistent menu makes the most of hearty, homemade cooking, with generous portions that arrive exactly as promised, using fresh ingredients and family recipes.
Dishes appear reliably every day, but there are a few standout favorites: the chicken bruschetta with steak fries and grilled corn, the chicken meatball and sausage special over angel hair pasta, and the eggplant parmesan hero. The team at this cozy, welcoming restaurant know exactly how to make you feel cared for, and treat you like you’re part of the family. And if you let them know you’re in the mood for something special, it’ll be served with a smile—and maybe an extra slice of homemade pie.
Lucky Boy’s steady presence across from the hotels brings the same warmth (and reasonable prices) to satisfying meals, Greek salads with abundant vegetables and feta, and nostalgic homemade bread, just a short walk away.
Prime Bistro
$$$$ | (516) 374-7772 | WEBSITE

It’s a rare spot that can be all things to all people, but Lawrence’s Prime Bistro really does have something for everybody, at any time of day. The light music and pleasant ambiance might be understated, but the approach (including the fact that service is consistently praised) is distinctively polished. Excellent appetizers and sushi, with some suggesting they’re the best part of the meal? Check. A well-varied menu including duck confit spring rolls? Check.
We’re big fans of their mushroom soup and the steaks—though occasionally undercooked—are generally enjoyed. And if you’re feeling fancy, their kosher dining room fits the bill for a classy night out. You can also enjoy the courteous and helpful staff providing menu suggestions without being overbearing, just like the owner handles seating issues apologetically.
Sushi Tokyo Lawrence
$$ | (516) 882-2244 | WEBSITE

This 40-seater in Lawrence is one of the most reliable sushi spots in town. Run by a dedicated team under kosher supervision, those fortunate enough to visit Sushi Tokyo Lawrence can expect fresh, high-quality rolls and miso soup served with genuine warmth by the welcoming staff. The only item that consistently earns praise from regulars is the Supreme Platter party tray, loaded with amazing fish and perfect for sharing.
The restaurant also offers plenty of vegetarian options alongside its main menu, and it’s worth every minute you spend waiting for your food—which typically arrives in about five minutes—in the upscale yet family-friendly atmosphere.
Burger King
$ | (516) 239-0046 | WEBSITE

Burger King, with its clean, comfortable interior and friendly staff, is the ultimate Lawrence quick-service spot. The perfectly grilled Whopper with its signature flame-broiled taste is something everyone in Nassau County, visitor or longtime resident, should try at least once. The quiet atmosphere and efficient service give off a relaxed, pleasant vibe, as does the accessible restroom area.
Its gluten-free options like the bacon cheese burger, made with care by dedicated staff including Gianna who took our order, make Burger King a solid destination for those with dietary needs. Every visit starts with a complimentary refill on drinks; get some fries or onion rings to go along and then delve into your burger.
We’ve been known to digress from the Whopper in favor of the other grilled offerings, and always end the meal satisfied with the overall positive experience, even if the drive-thru takes a bit during busy periods.
Panera Bread
$ | (516) 239-0183 | WEBSITE

Panera Bread is one of the most reliable spots in Lawrence, with its bright, clean interior and welcoming vibe, plus a menu that hits just right. It’s probably a weekly stop for most people, and it’s worth it. The move here is to go for the broccoli soup or pizza—they’re fresh and really showcase the classic comfort foods that the team is justifiably proud of (and you won’t be missing out on their remarkable tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich).
And should you want to enjoy your meal in comfort, they’ve got a children’s menu and plenty of parking, and a spacious seating area in the shopping center location.
Cho-Sen Island
$$ | (516) 374-1199 | WEBSITE

Cho-Sen Island is where you should go for the best kosher Chinese food in town, with a decent variety of vegetarian options that keep regulars coming back. Grab a spot in the dining room and you might feel like you’re at a neighborhood gem with good parking options, rather than just another strip-mall find. The menu includes exceptional Sweet & Sour chicken and superb egg drop soup, though we’re partial to the unique and crispy-delicious wonton wafers and the consistent quality that fans praise.
It’s a fast and friendly staff show—though they’ve been criticized for not clearly disclosing the gratuity policy—and since the food can sometimes arrive not freshly prepared or cold on some dishes, you’ll want to time your visit right. The folks behind Cho-Sen Island also offer mixed-reviewed items like eggplant in garlic sauce and steamed dumplings, but the overall experience remains highly recommended despite these minor negatives.
Hibana Kosher Hibachi
$$$ | (516) 200-9550 | WEBSITE

Hibana Kosher Hibachi has a lively and fun atmosphere, and happens to be one of the most enjoyable spots in all of Lawrence, in addition to being a fantastic restaurant for celebrating special occasions or dates. We like to start with a ginger ale cocktail and then get into the fresh and flavorful chicken or the salmon over rice, before digging into the hanger steak and one of the vegetarian options (make it the tofu).
The same folks who run Hibana also have exceptional, attentive service with staff who know the extensive menu inside and out, which makes the whole experience feel accommodating and friendly. While the prices run a bit high, the portion sizes are generous and the overall dining experience is highly recommended.
