JJ Grill Mediterranean Food
$ | (502) 501-6300 | WEBSITE

Some of the best Mediterranean food in Louisville is located just off the main drag, in a cozy space with a relentlessly welcoming atmosphere. JJ Grill, from the owner who takes great pride in his work, doesn’t just serve standard fare. They focus on fresh, homemade dishes with wonderful spices and marinades, and when you try the lamb kabobs or the whole pompano fresh from the grill, you’ll understand why.
Get the vegetarian sampler platter, and save room for at least one dessert, like the addictive homemade hummus.
Potbelly Sandwich Shop
$ | (502) 540-1100 | WEBSITE

This casual spot is one of our favorite places to grab a sandwich in Louisville, simply because the options go way beyond the usual suspects like basic turkey or ham. The headliner is the Turkey and Swiss, with fresh ingredients that get a boost from being made to order. Even if you only order the combo deal with chips and a drink, you’ll have a meal that will satisfy your hunger for a long time.
Canary Club
$ | WEBSITE

We love that you get to try so many different things at Canary Club. Kid… candy store… you see what we’re saying. Definitely go for the creamy olive hummus and crispy potato chips, as well as non-vegan options like the charcuterie boards (mostly cheese, not complaining). It’s fun to come solo and sit at the vintage bar right by the open doors, though coming with a small group does mean you get to share a greater variety. Choose wisely.
Jasmine Asian Bistro
$ | (502) 618-3000 | WEBSITE

This quiet neighborhood spot, a hidden gem for years now, is a well-honed operation that’s been polished to consistency. The service here leans toward the personable and fast, but the food—egg rolls and wonton soup, for example—is the main reason why this remains a reliable place to dine. If you’re seeking a highlight-of-the-week, flavorful restaurant experience where you won’t feel foolish for spending around fifty dollars, this is it.
Chik’n & Mi
$$ | (502) 890-5731 | WEBSITE

This Louisville favorite still has that beautiful patio and inviting outdoor seating that makes it perfect for date nights or gatherings, but now it’s become a destination for both locals and visitors from other cities. Hearty and unpretentious, the menu includes everything from their signature fried chicken and chicken lettuce wraps with peanut butter sauce to vegetarian coconut ramen and Roman soup.
Notably, they serve the same amazing cocktails and brunch items that you’ll find during their happy hour, and you should try them in the main dining area or on the patio. The staff remains extremely knowledgeable, and about 80% of the menu is already gluten-free, with a dedicated gluten-free menu readily available. The owners are still super nice, and both the restaurant and patio maintain their beautiful atmosphere.
With impeccable service and excellent food, it’s easy to see why this has become one of the best restaurants in the area.
Sub Station II

This sub shop has been a Louisville staple for decades, with some regulars visiting for over thirty years. Kabuki Food Truck Cane Run Louisville

Kabuki Food Truck isn’t your typical Louisville eatery. At this hidden gem on Cane Run, the steak and shrimp hibachi comes with perfectly seasoned rice, and the shrimp & steak combo is cooked to tender perfection. Some trucks serve basic fare, but the real standout here is the steak/scallops with rice. Come for a phenomenal food truck experience, and order the hibachi for a satisfying meal.
Taco N Madres (K brunch)
$ | (502) 665-9402 | WEBSITE

Most of Louisville’s great Mexican spots are tucked into cramped storefronts where seating is scarce and the atmosphere is loud, but this brunch destination turns that expectation upside down. Here, you enjoy your street tacos in a clean, beautifully designed space that feels both modern and welcoming. At $14, the birria tacos are one of the most satisfying deals in town, but they’re cooked perfectly, bursting with flavor, and come with that incredible spicy broth for dipping.
The crispy outside gives way to a cheesy, tender inside that makes every bite a delight. Pair them with a Jamaica margarita from the bar—it’s refreshing, well-balanced, and very reasonably priced. The service is easygoing and hospitable, with a friendly cashier who keeps things moving quickly. Don’t skip the salsa bar, which adds just the right kick to the asada tacos or enchiladas suiza.
It’s an awesome atmosphere that makes this spot a genuine surprise for anyone craving authentic Mexican food in Louisville.
Goodfellas Pizzeria – Baxter Ave.
$ | (502) 398-5704 | WEBSITE

You might be skeptical of a pizza joint that stays open later than most places in Louisville, but the food here is surprisingly good—especially the pizza with its crispy crust, flavorful sauce, and just the right amount of cheese. If you’re lucky enough to snag a spot on the ample outdoor seating (which fills up fast on weekends), you’ll earn the right to sit in a super chill and laid-back atmosphere with a well-stocked bar and free retro arcade games for kids.
The vibe is perfect for a lazy day or a night out with friends, and the staff, including Emily and Heaven, are friendly and always make guests feel welcome, making celebrations like birthdays memorable.

Be sure to save room for the cachapas, which come with a sweet corn batter that melts in your mouth.
Smyrna Inn
$ | (502) 742-5042 | WEBSITE

This cozy Louisville bar in the heart of the city—known for its welcoming atmosphere and excellent drinks—was made for casual evenings out with friends, but that description barely scratches the surface of the experience here. Quality libations are crafted thoughtfully and to their full potential in offerings like a perfectly balanced old-fashioned. You really can’t go wrong with any drink here, especially when paired with their popular chips.
The live music and friendly service make it a local favorite that feels like home.
