Ridgewood boasts a few solid dining spots within its charming downtown. But to truly experience the best this Bergen County gem has to offer, you need to look beyond Main Street. We’d gladly circle the Garden State Plaza parking lot for hours just for a seat at these tables—specifically for farm-to-table plates that sing of New Jersey’s bounty, celebratory dinners anchored by perfect pastas, and cocktails that tell a story. Karaoke Rock 21 | bar & dining
$$ | (201) 482-8800 | WEBSITE

On weekends, this otherwise quiet karaoke bar in Ridgewood gets packed with celebration. The excitement is justified, thanks to the place’s YouTube Karaoke machine. We particularly love their latest Kpop hits selection with crystal-clear sound. These all come paired with excellent food and drinks, plus a spacious, clean room for singing. And for something memorable, after belting out songs for hours, grab a helpful manager on the way out.
Sook Pastry
$$ | (201) 493-2500 | WEBSITE

There’s a reason this place has just as many take-out boxes as sit-down customers—and it’s the kouign amann. Sook Pastry’s version isn’t only full of flaky, buttery layers and caramelized sugar, but it’s somehow even better the next morning with coffee. If you want to appreciate it right away, grab one of the small tables by the fresh flowers. Beyond the kouign amann, their almond croissants and specialty cakes like the gluten-free Godwin and chocolate mousse Lincoln deserve special mentions.
And the bakery’s second entrance for chocolates is just as tempting, but it only leads to the same cozy kitchen view.
Date’N’Dog Café
$$ | WEBSITE

Tucked away in one of those charming Ridgewood storefronts that feels like it’s been there forever, Date’N’Dog Café is a local mainstay. With a cozy atmosphere that encourages lingering and friendly staff who remember your name, it’s one of those rare breakfast-and-lunch spots that makes you want to ditch the home office, and it has a menu that keeps regulars coming back.
The team usually makes sure that your Waygu Steakburger with special sauce and tender new pork dish are prepared just right (and they are). Order the sirloin—it’s cooked with such care and seasoning, you won’t need any extra sauce. This place is perfect for a casual friend catch-up, a family weekend brunch, or a business lunch where the cocktails flow as freely as the conversation.
La Bella Pizza
$ | (201) 652-0444 | WEBSITE

This bustling Ridgewood spot serves some of the best Italian-American classics our neighborhood has to offer. The place has a straightforward dining area with checkered tablecloths and warm lighting, trays of crispy grandma slices coming out of the oven, and a menu that covers all the comfort food bases.
We especially like the Italian hero sandwiches on those super soft rolls that hold up under the weight of the fillings, plus those delicious naked wings with real blue cheese and a pulled pork BBQ that tastes as tremendous as its value. Come here for a quick take-out dinner with the family, or grab slices to go—La Bella’s so solid they have a steady stream of customers picking up orders at the counter.
Black Magic Bakehouse
$ | WEBSITE

Visit this delightful Ridgewood spot for a morning treat without the fuss. The cozy, beautifully decorated seating area smells like fresh-baked bread, and you can savor a huge lox and cream cheese sandwich with banana bread that’s perfectly moist. Best part is, even at peak morning hours, the small place doesn’t feel overwhelming. Yes, it’s hard to believe this kind of calm exists with such creative flavors, but just order another Cinnie and don’t question it.
Steel Wheel Tavern
$$ | (201) 882-1800 | WEBSITE

If anybody tries to tell you that Ridgewood lacks lively neighborhood taverns, bring them to Steel Wheel Tavern and prepare to act smug. This cozy spot offers a fun atmosphere with great local vibes, where you’ll find dates and groups gathered at the outdoor seating area during warmer months. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the choices—including the recommended wagyu burger—but variety doesn’t dilute the quality.
If you only have time for one visit, get the wagyu burger with its tender beef and perfect seasoning, alongside one of their well-made drinks for some refreshment. And fill your evening with the excellent service from staff like Artemis, who goes out of their way to ensure a great experience. The convenient location across from the NJ Transit station means you can enjoy your night without worrying about ride-sharing.
Hama Korean Cuisine
$ | (201) 251-7734 | WEBSITE

Hama Korean Cuisine shares a Ridgewood storefront with a sign that says Tomo Sushi, which means you could technically walk past it and miss some exceptional Korean food, all in one glance. This authentic and welcoming restaurant was once known for its small dining room, and now is a dine-in or takeout spot. But that doesn’t mean the quality has changed. No meal here is complete without their flavorful bibimbap and soft tofu dishes scooped up with generous small sides.
There’s also a straightforward menu with easy-to-navigate versions of their popular dishes if you want to stock up on veggie dumplings before the next weekend reservation rush comes along.
Jersey Mike’s Subs
$ | (201) 857-5377 | WEBSITE

This straightforward Ridgewood sandwich shop may not look fancy from the outside, but they craft consistently excellent subs. The #10 Tuna is their standout sandwich—it’s generously portioned and layered with crisp veggies that glisten under the bright fluorescent lights overhead. Order that with the Roast Beef and Provolone, piled high with tender meat and melted cheese. And don’t even get us started on the customization options where they’ll heap on tons of pickles exactly to your liking.
Bamboo House
$$ | (201) 447-3111 | WEBSITE

Bamboo House is a terrific takeout spot in Ridgewood that serves Chinese classics like soup, dumplings, and egg rolls. All are worthy of a try, but our favorite is the egg rolls that taste even better when dipped in their delicious soy-based sauce. The combo plates run about $12 each, and they’re big enough to keep you full for a few hours. Add some fried rice with the aforementioned sauce and a fortune cookie for dessert.
Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream Shops
$$ | (201) 447-9840 | WEBSITE

This classic, inviting ice cream shop is decked out with gleaming stainless steel, cheerful red accents, and a nostalgic parlor vibe that may briefly make you rethink counting calories. But despite the polished retro decor, Häagen-Dazs remains approachable. The staff is warm and enthusiastic, the counters are spotless, and there’s almost always a friendly face ready to serve.
Settle in for rich coffee ice cream with a robust flavor that captures a perfect cup, Belgian chocolate so decadent you’ll taste it before the first spoonful melts, and plump pistachios. Sure, the seating runs a little limited and the pineapple coconut can be aggressively sweet, but the clunkers are few and far between.
