San Francisco’s reputation often centers on tech innovation and foggy hills, but with a population of nearly 900,000, it’s also home to a thriving culinary scene—especially when it comes to steak. From classic chophouses to modern grills, here are the 12 best steakhouses you should be eating at in San Francisco.
Harris’ Restaurant – The San Francisco Steakhouse
$$$$ | (415) 673-1888 | WEBSITE

There are certain things that probably come to mind when you hear the term classic steakhouse: dark wood paneling on the walls, worn leather booths, seasoned regulars, and stiff cocktails. Harris’ Restaurant – The San Francisco Steakhouse has all those things as well as a food menu that’s worth braving the downtown traffic. The prime rib, cooked exactly to order with a perfect crust, is a standout, but we also like ordering the NY Peppercorn Steak and Caesar salad made with crisp romaine.
And don’t think for a second that you’ll be the only one enjoying a great meal—everybody inside is lingering over beautifully presented plates. The staff are consistently friendly and professional, making every visit feel special. While the experience runs around $75 per person before drinks, the high-quality execution makes it a great value for special occasions. The warm, classic ambiance is the kind that makes you want to settle in and savor every bite.
John’s Grill
$$$ | (415) 986-0069 | WEBSITE

John’s Grill has been serving San Francisco for over a century, but only recently became our top-rated steakhouse in the city. Why? For starters, you could dine at this historic spot a hundred times and have a completely different—and memorable—experience each time. Come on weekends for ribeye steaks with baked potatoes and fresh sourdough bread that you’ll tell your friends about. Show up just about any other night to enjoy Caesar salads and the best fries in town at a fair price.
Then there’s the famous Dashiell booth—where the author finished writing The Maltese Falcon—offering a reservation-worthy experience with vintage neon signs creating a photo-worthy exterior. There’s no such thing as a dull meal at John’s Grill, so just go whenever you can snag a table the fastest.
Geneva Steak
$$ | (415) 586-6685 | WEBSITE

Eating a meal at Geneva Steak is kind of like discovering a classic film you’d forgotten how much you loved. It will always improve the quality of your evening. From perfectly seasoned NY steak to soft baked potatoes cooked just right, the food here is inspired by the reliable comfort of hometown dining.
If you don’t live in the neighborhood, parking can be a little tricky, but we’d navigate that dark walk from the back lot any day, just for a plate of yellow rice with golden butter, veggies, and grilled bread.
Osso Steakhouse
$$$$ | (415) 771-6776 | WEBSITE

Osso Steakhouse has long been a staple in San Francisco’s dining scene, consistently delivering a memorable experience with its outstanding service and warm ambiance. The menu caters to both steak aficionados and those seeking refined comfort, all enjoyed in a cozy, intimate setting that feels like a true escape from the city’s hustle—not just another downtown steakhouse.
For first-timers, I recommend the $75 12oz bone-in Filet, which arrives perfectly cooked and paired with their standout French Onion soup. On return visits, explore their appetizers like the Hamachi Crudo or shushito peppers, and don’t skip the chocolate hazelnut cake for dessert.
Alexander’s Steakhouse
$$$$ | (415) 495-1111 | WEBSITE

You’ll find one of San Francisco’s best steakhouses tucked away in the city’s bustling downtown. We’re not exaggerating—that’s genuinely where Alexander’s Steakhouse is located. This elegant, energetic restaurant offers big, beautiful cuts of high-quality beef, including a massive 130+ porterhouse and a juicy bone-in ribeye. The ribeye is exceptionally tender and flavorful after careful preparation and tastes even better with their simple wedge salad on the side.
Make the steaks a priority, but we can vouch that everything here is delicious, including the crispy rice pastrami bites, or Hokkaido bread served warm with butter.
Miller & Lux Restaurant
$$$$ | (415) 872-6699 | WEBSITE

Miller & Lux delivers on its promise of a top-tier steakhouse experience with its refined San Francisco dining. The menu at this waterfront spot covers all the bases, from silky steak tartare with perfect seasoning, buttery wagyu tomahawks that practically dissolve on the tongue, and brassica dishes that even vegetarians will love, all the way to key lime tarts with just the right amount of zing.
We’re yet to order something at Miller & Lux that doesn’t impress, but if you’re feeling overwhelmed, the staff will guide you through a curated journey where everything arrives cooked exactly as requested. The upstairs seating offers sunset views over the water that make any meal feel special, and while parking can be tricky on event nights with valet running $65, the effort is always worth it for the flawless service and elegant atmosphere.
Izzy’s Steaks & Chops
$$$ | (415) 563-0487 | WEBSITE

Izzy’s Steaks & Chops is a long-time favorite in San Francisco that specializes in the kind of classic steakhouse fare you crave after a draining week at work—like prime rib, beer battered shrimp, and creamed spinach. That said, the main draw at this updated local spot is the attention to detail and high-quality service.
Years before steakhouses became just another part of the city’s dining scene, Izzy’s was cranking out consistently excellent food with a fun decor and classic steakhouse feel, so that’s probably what you should expect here.
Roka Akor – San Francisco
$$$$ | (415) 362-8887 | WEBSITE

This upscale spot in San Francisco isn’t doing anything wildly different than other high-end steakhouses in the city, it’s just executing the playbook to a tee. Sleek wooden tables and warm ambient lighting give the dining area a sophisticated, inviting feel. The miso black cod arrives flaky and flavorful and thick cuts of steak are cooked perfectly to order. The bustling main room hums with the energy of a celebratory gathering.
Roka Akor is the kind of versatile destination where you can take friends for a delightful Happy Hour and then return a week later for an Omakase dinner and tuna tataki at a cozy table.
STK San Francisco
$$$$ | (415) 375-8094 | WEBSITE

The crown jewel of not just the San Francisco steakhouse scene, but the entire Bay Area, STK San Francisco is an absolute must-visit. The chic, lively steakhouse has been serving juicy steaks, crispy fries, and everything else under the California sun for years, and built a devoted following in the process. Come here at 7pm on a Friday and be greeted by 100 other people who had the same idea as you.
But not to worry, STK is a well-oiled machine and will have you seated, served, and savoring that Bourbon Maple glazed salmon in no time.
Niku Steakhouse
$$$$ | (415) 829-7817 | WEBSITE

Finding Niku Steakhouse might take some navigation through San Francisco’s bustling streets, but believe us when we say this steakhouse tucked away in the city is absolutely worth making the trip. With dark wood paneling, soft amber lighting, and leather banquettes, dining here feels a bit like you’ve entered a private club, but one that happens to serve some of the most exceptional steaks in town. There’s a printed menu available, but the real move is to go for the Wagyu tasting experience.
Most evenings, your bill will easily surpass $300, so Niku certainly isn’t your casual weeknight dinner spot, but if you’re looking to celebrate a milestone with one of San Francisco’s great culinary experiences, this place is worth every single dollar.
Bobo’s
$$$$ | (415) 441-8880 | WEBSITE

If you’re in San Francisco, you probably already know you don’t have to go to a fancy downtown steakhouse to get tremendous steak – you can just go to Bobo’s. For everyone else, it’s time to head to this popular spot. They have a prix fixe menu, but you’re focusing on two highlights: the Prime Bone-In Rib Eye and the Mac and Cheese. These are the dishes specifically praised by regulars, and they are incredible.
Start with the mussels appetizer from the prix fixe and work your way up to the bone-in filet mignon.
Tad’s Steakhouse
$$ | (415) 956-2139 | WEBSITE

This San Francisco steakhouse near the BART and cable car stations grills all of its meat dishes to order on a blazing flattop commanded by a person in an apron. The burgers with melted cheese peeking through toasted buns are good to share, but the well-cooked steak is so satisfying that savoring one solo with a tiny but potent American coffee is the perfect meal.
The menu doesn’t provide any dish descriptions, so if you aren’t as familiar with American steakhouse classics, just trust us when we say everything that leaves their kitchen is delicious.
