Stockton’s waterfront glimmers with promise, and the historic brick facades of downtown whisper tales of California’s past. But you’re not here for architecture lessons. You crave pristine nigiri, buttery toro, and hand rolls that transport you straight to Tsukiji. From decades-old institutions to sleek newcomers slicing fish near the Delta, here’s where your omakase journey begins.
Jimmie’s Place
$ | (415) 799-6773 | WEBSITE

Jimmie’s Place is a sushi spot with a clean, modern look and a friendly “Welcome to Stockton” vibe. They have at least a dozen different signature rolls you can order individually or as part of a combo, including a surprising number of baked and fried varieties (lion king, spider, green dragon, and more). But we prefer the Antony Roll, which is the best way to appreciate their fresh, perfectly textured fish. Appetizers like stuffed mushrooms and crispy chicken are also available.
You can eat everything at a couple of sleek counters, but most people grab their neatly packed containers for take-out.
Prosperity Szechuan Cuisine 福香香
$ | (209) 227-5158 | WEBSITE

Prosperity Szechuan Cuisine is the kind of Chinese restaurant everyone wants to have in their neighborhood. It’s quiet, clean, and filled with a welcoming atmosphere that feels genuinely authentic. They make very good sushi, and if you’re not in a rush, it’s worth trying the fish fillet in flaming red oil, which takes a few extra minutes to prepare. There’s a good selection of hot and flavorful dishes, as well as quick and friendly service, fresh ingredients, and a peaceful dining experience.
Toyo Sushi
$ | (209) 473-1688 | WEBSITE

This sushi spot in Stockton makes us happy—mainly because of their inviting dining experience, but also because they serve sushi (duh). You can get your basic rolls like the “Bad Boy” and “Dark Knight,” but they also have more interesting options like gyoza, ika fry, and croquettes. The Chicken Katsu is also very good, and if you order a specialty roll not on the menu, it’s always a solid choice. Every place should do this.
There’s occasional crowding and parking challenges, but the friendly staff and reasonable prices make it a great choice for sushi lovers and families alike.
Matsuyama Restaurant
$ | (209) 952-0688 | WEBSITE

If you want some deeply satisfying sushi—perhaps when you need something fresh and reliable after a long day—Matsuyama Restaurant should be your go-to spot in Stockton. They have many variations on rolls and sashimi, so if you want a combo of fresh fish and decently priced options, you can get it here. They also have a menu filled with things like affordable Japanese dishes, family-friendly atmosphere, and some of the best quality fish we’ve had for the price.
This place is mostly sit-down dining, but the rooms can feel a bit empty if you want to eat in.
Domo Japanese Sushi Grill and Bar
$$ | (209) 451-3654 | WEBSITE

Showy chef performances at sushi bars often feel like dinner theater. But at Domo Japanese Sushi Grill and Bar—a Stockton spot with warm wood accents and soft lighting—the teppanyaki experience feels genuinely fun. There’s salmon that’s buttery and fresh, shrimp that’s perfectly grilled, and even something called bacon fried rice. Be sure to take advantage of the generous bento boxes. The garlic fried rice (served with attentive, interactive service) is worth a visit all on its own.
New Fu Lim Restaurant
$ | (209) 943-2401 | WEBSITE

New Fu Lim Restaurant feels like a neighborhood sushi spot, and it’s a great place to bring the family and share some hot and sour soup and a few rolls. The food here is Chinese and Japanese (not a fusion of both). Our favorite thing to start with is the tangy house wonton soup with pork and shrimp. Follow that up with the tiger roll packed with fresh fish and avocado. Their fried prawns are crispy and golden, so make sure you have plenty on hand to dip into the ginger beef with savory sauce.
Raw Sushi
$$ | (209) 954-9729 | WEBSITE

Raw Sushi offers a dining experience that feels both intimate and expansive—not a sprawling space, but one where every detail matters. So don’t expect to rush through your meal here. The name of this place tells you exactly what you’re getting. They have standout rolls like the Big Head Roll and salmon bombs that come with perfectly balanced flavors, while their ramen has been called the best in town. As for their service, go for the personalized recommendations from the friendly staff.
It’s the perfect thing to experience during a busy week when you (wisely) think to yourself: “I deserve something exceptional.”
Shirasoni Japanese Restaurant
$$ | (209) 473-2525 | WEBSITE

Shirasoni Japanese Restaurant is a lively Teppanyaki spot with a solid menu, and, much like a seasoned performer and most hibachi masters, this place does pretty much everything right. The garlic fried rice is great, and we’d happily make a meal out of the chicken teriyaki and hibachi scallops. But the real reason you come here is the show. The chefs cook right in front of you, and our favorite is the entertaining grill master.
He’s friendly, skilled, and possibly more engaging than any host currently working the front door. The portions are huge, the service is attentive, and the prices are excellent compared to other Teppanyaki places in town, making it a favorite for special occasions and date nights.
Masa | Contemporary Japanese Lounge
$$ | (209) 473-1255 | WEBSITE

Masa serves exceptional Japanese cuisine, with plenty of sushi and sashimi options like specialty rolls. It also doubles as a contemporary lounge that offers a calming atmosphere, which is felt throughout the intimate dining space. This family-owned restaurant in Stockton opens for dinner, when you can get a beautifully plated poke bowl that any sushi lover would be happy with and some fresh shrimp tempura.
(We recommend the chef’s selection nigiri.) For a full experience, try the omakase tasting or signature rolls made with ingredients from trusted local suppliers, which also produce a great house-made soy sauce that you should drizzle on everything here.
Sushi Villa Buffet Chinese & Japanese Grill
$ | (209) 955-1396 | WEBSITE

This sushi buffet makes exceptional fresh sushi with a rotating setup, along with a ton of other dishes (crab Rangoon, steamed rolls, and wonton soup, for example) and options like deep-fried sushi and the king roll. The space looks like a clean but somewhat outdated buffet hall where you want to have several plates, and there’s plenty of seating, so this place is perfect for a big, casual group meal.
We recommend coming during off-peak hours to avoid parking challenges and load up on sashimi and generous custom sushi servings.
Sakura Hibachi Catering
$$ | (209) 888-4774 | WEBSITE

With its clean, comfortable dining room and spacious hibachi grills, Sakura Hibachi Catering feels like a neighborhood spot that’s been serving families for years, and it seems like many regulars come here for their weekly hibachi fix. We recommend the excellent filet mignon hibachi and the delicious salmon and shrimp dishes. Chef Bee makes the experience with his engaging, friendly service at the grill.
You can leave here with a satisfying hibachi meal for the whole family and still pay reasonable prices that beat what you’d spend at fancier hibachi places in the area.
