If you’re exploring San Francisco, an evening savoring its wine bar scene should top your itinerary. The vibrant city, with its fog-kissed hills and culinary ambition, brims with more vinous haunts than ever. Whether you’re seeking a cozy nook for bold Californian reds, a sleek spot for natural wines with small plates, or a lively destination before venturing to North Beach, the Mission, or Hayes Valley, San Francisco pours it all.
7 Adams
$$$$ | (415) 655-9154 | WEBSITE

7 Adams in San Francisco is a wine bar and restaurant rolled into one, and they’re doing incredible things with their 5-course meal—so be ready for a wait for reservations (it’s worth it). Once you’re in, try the hangar steak that’s cooked well and paired with red wine, or the amazing cod that’s perfectly prepared. While there’s a cozy atmosphere with amazing music and very friendly staff, the real magic happens during the meal where thought and love are evident in every detail.
From there, you can enjoy the simple yet satisfying bread and butter while watching the staff in action, sipping coffee after your meal.
Zazie
$$ | (415) 564-5332 | WEBSITE

You probably already know that Zazie has some of the best French food in town. But even if you’ve been two or three times before, you should still prioritize at least one weekend brunch visit during your trip after exploring one of the nearby neighborhoods. Definitely get an order of the fried trout with potatoes and salad—instead of just crispy, the fish skin, potato skin, and garlic cloves are perfectly golden and tender on the inside, resulting in a delightful mix of textures.
And, yes, you should also try their French toast with caramelized peaches, which is arguably the best in all of San Francisco.
San Francisco Wine Society
$$ | (415) 674-3567 | WEBSITE

When it opened in 2024 by the San Francisco Wine Society team, this venue quickly became a go-to spot for after-work gatherings, date nights, and pre-theater drinks. The versatility of this cozy and stylish wine bar stems largely from its casual yet sophisticated social vibe—a rarity in San Francisco and executed perfectly at the Wine Society, especially when their charcuterie and small bites, served with thoughtful wine pairings, are involved.
Just don’t expect to see many empty seats, as this place is typically packed with wine lovers and professionals. Although it’s open for evening socializing, the bocce court is the move. Enjoy the perfectly curated wine selection that’s a little indulgent.
20 Spot
$$ | (415) 851-6064 | WEBSITE

The best $18 you can spend in the Mission is 20 Spot’s house bread with pimenton oregano butter: a warm loaf served with a perfectly seasoned, creamy spread. This is a cozy, intimate wine bar with an impressive selection of California wines, classic French and Italian options, and modern American fare.
And while the space is compact, the variety of interesting wines you can sample with knowledgeable staff guidance is anything but, with seasonal small plates, cheese boards, and vibrant dishes like beets and beans.
Z & Y Peking Duck
$$$ | (415) 986-1899 | WEBSITE

Z & Y Peking Duck is a Chinese restaurant, but the opposite of the stereotypical heavy, greasy kind you might imagine. It’s bright, lively, and has an inviting vibe that makes you want to settle in for hours. But like any great Chinese spot, it’s all about the knockout Peking duck here, the majority of which is made with top-notch ingredients prepared with traditional care. The signature Peking duck is crispy, flavorful, and a must-try you should pair with a side of their tender pea sprouts.
Finish your meal with the just-sweet-enough walnut honey shrimp, and don’t be surprised when the bustling, energetic atmosphere playing in the background has you reminiscing about that unforgettable meal you shared with friends back in the day.
Starbelly
$$ | (415) 252-7500 | WEBSITE

You’re at Starbelly, in the Market St / Castro area, for the excellent and almost exquisite food—and to enjoy a lively yet refined environment that feels like a happy urban retreat thanks to thoughtful details, upbeat music, and a wonderful back patio that’s a surprise delight. The menu is packed with all the great things that make for satisfying dining: ceviches that are standout, chiliquiles that hit the spot, Brussels sprouts done right, and various pizzas that feel intentional.
Like its reputation suggests, there’s also a must-order vegan stuffed pepper on the menu, but this version is filled with refried beans, corn, and salsa. The cocktails are perfect, with the ‘doctor’s order’ being well-made, and the service is sublime, with quick and attentive servers. It’s a great place to celebrate any occasion, leaving you eager to return.
Elements Bar & Lounge
$$ | (415) 814-8888 | WEBSITE

This elevated lounge is hands down one of the best wine bars in San Francisco. Their drinks are classic with a creative twist. Prioritize the oysters with passion fruit, stunningly fresh with a sweet-tart kick—they’re perfect for sharing and even better with a glass of rosé. While the main lounge area is spacious, we like to prioritize a seat at the always-busy bar, which has a view of bustling Union Square through the windows.
The cod fried balls and garlic fries are tasty, and the bread with duo of butter and seaweed is heavenly. Happy hour offers great deals, with those oysters at $1.50 each and delightful cocktails that are expertly crafted. The ceviche is also a standout. Service is friendly and warm, with staff checking in regularly. The decor and music create a classy yet fun vibe, although it could be quieter to enhance the relaxing atmosphere.
Overall, it’s an intimate experience with an elevated vibe, perfect for gatherings with friends or treating oneself.
Hôtel Biron
$ | (415) 780-5366 | WEBSITE

You’ll immediately feel at home at Hôtel Biron, a cozy wine bar where the bartenders treat you like they’re your actual friends, not just someone you’ll ask wine-related questions to for the next few hours. The snack-focused menu includes tasty bites like umami crackers and satisfying cheese plates. If you’re not in the mood for a full evening, act like one of the regulars and enjoy a glass of wine on one of the couches.
buddy
$ | WEBSITE

You discovered your new favorite neighborhood haunt last night at buddy. Now, it’s time to see if it holds up in the warm afternoon light. Head to buddy for happy hour, where, if all else fails, you and those friends (whose names you definitely didn’t forget) can casually chat over small plates on the charming sidewalk seating, with the alluring wine selection glowing on the shelves.
The roasted trumpet mushrooms and smoked whitefish tonnato are your perfect companions, and the bitter milk punch makes everything feel just right. It’s that cozy spot where the staff’s warmth and the owner’s friendliness turn a simple snack into a classy prelude to whatever comes next.
Barberio Osteria
$$$ | (415) 874-9583 | WEBSITE

You might think that with the mansion-like feel, spacious layout, and lively ambiance, Barberio Osteria is one of those upscale Italian spots serving predictable, overpriced fare. Not the case here. Their authentic Italian menu is packed with heavy hitters. You’ll savor the 10-hour bolognese pappardelle while relaxing in the cozy, warm space that feels both elegant and welcoming.
The menu has other hits like the whole branzino fish, beautifully presented Cappelletti filled with autumn squash, and Maccheroni alla chitarra with guinea fowl ragu. The best part of a trip here is that you can walk out having spent just $35 for an exceptional dinner, and somehow, the incredibly kind and helpful staff always accommodates special requests like vegetarian options, even though they’re always busy with date nights and groups of friends.
Shuggie’s Trash Pie + Natural Wine
$$ | (415) 655-3051 | WEBSITE

A visit to Shuggie’s Trash Pie + Natural Wine is all about indulging in creative upcycled dishes in numerous forms, like fried oysters, sausage party pizza with honey, and meticulously prepared cod. They specialize in natural wine and eclectic fare, and everything on the menu is a win, but we always go for the $18 sausage party pizza. This vibey spot has an extensive natural wine list since soaking in the funky atmosphere during golden hour is all part of the experience.
Order multiple rounds of natural wine and that recommended bread, and before you know it, time will kind of stand still.

You’ll be surrounded by a mix of wine lovers and casual diners, while the unpretentious, highly knowledgeable staff makes everyone feel at home. Head here for lunch, dinner, or happy hour, or anytime you want to enjoy the feeling of going out while still feeling completely comfortable.
Lers Ros
$$ | (415) 931-6917 | WEBSITE

There’s a vibrant food scene in San Francisco, and you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you skipped one of the authentic Thai spots in the city. Lers Ros has steadily become a local institution, and it’s without question our favorite Thai restaurant in town. Everything here is remarkably flavorful, but the Tom yum soup is truly something: a complex yet incredible starter served steaming hot with lemongrass and galangal infusing every spoonful.
Other standouts include the coconut soup with chicken bubbling on a lit hob, as well as sun dried beef and pad Thai that never disappoint.
Dento Piano Cafe and Bar
$ | (415) 712-5651 | WEBSITE

There are two sides of San Francisco: the bustling tourist hubs and the quieter neighborhood gems. Dento Piano Cafe and Bar is located in the latter, which also happens to be home to some of the city’s best modern architecture. Take a stroll around, and stop here for a sweetened latte and a vegan cookie. Like the area itself, it may not be the first place you visit in SF, but we can almost guarantee it’ll be one of your favorites.
The Korean-inspired dishes are refreshing (try the misuguru grain shake) and it’s one of the more affordable places to sit down for quality coffee in the neighborhood.
SPQR
$$$$ | (415) 771-7779 | WEBSITE

Like its modern Italian-Californian counterparts, SPQR brings in progressive, inventive vibes and is perfect for date nights—cozy enough for a romantic evening, but still exciting enough for foodie friends.
A small, bustling space reminiscent of mom-and-pop shops in Italy sets the stage for creative dishes done right—think wild spinach casarecce with its bold flavors, filo custard pie with arugula pesto and grana padano that’s fresh and unusual in all the best ways, and their signature tasting menu that’s reasonably priced though portions are small, so adding a side or two is a smart move.
Birba
$$ | (415) 549-7612 | WEBSITE

Birba is a hidden gem in Hayes Valley, San Francisco, offering a cozy and unique dining experience—this place is low-key with parklet seating nicely sheltered from the breeze, making it a perfect synthesis of indoor and outdoor. Start with some delightful small plates like the lovely flatbread, soft when hot and hardening to a crispy cracker when it cools, before moving on to their varied wine selection.
What else keeps us coming back is their friendly, quick, and helpful service that isn’t too overbearing, making it an excellent choice for catching up with friends or a first date, and the marinated artichokes, good and a large portion, pleasant enough for sharing.
Aziza
$$$ | (415) 682-4196 | WEBSITE

What began as a hidden gem in San Francisco has since blossomed into one of the city’s most exceptional and unique wine bar restaurants. Aziza is warm, welcoming, and feels like you’re dining at your friend’s home—if your friend were obsessed with incredible flavors. As for the food, it’s a clever blend of Moroccan-inspired dishes with modern California twists.
On the consistently delicious menu, you’ll find perfectly moist cornbread with harissa butter and divine eggplant appetizers—all beautifully prepared. You should make a reservation well in advance since this place is so great that everyone’s trying to eat here, and the expertly blended cocktails and interesting wine list make it worth the wait.
